I—I
believed—memory might mirror no reflections on me, |
I have very distinct beliefs on pretty much everything... Here is where I will tell you my opinion on certain topics and you can tell me your two cents if you wish... Enjoy! Remember these are just MY opinions...
Emo is a word that a lot of music critics and otherwise ignorant or naive people use... If you are wondering what "emo" is, to briefly define it, it is simply emotional music... The reason I don't believe this genre really exists is because ALL music should be emotional... You can't really tag a genre on music... Take a look at any band you want... I'll use Jimi Hendrix for example... All of his songs are very emotional and heart felt... What makes Dashboard Confessional or The Get Up Kids any different from Jimi? Besides a few fundamental differences, the lyrics are ALL emotional and yet Jimi Hendrix isn't described as "emo"...Bands like Dashboard Confessional and The Get Up Kids are referred to as "emo" by almost every single review I've read. People call me emo because of the clothes I wear, how I act, and the music I choose to listen to... I don't really mind, but calling anything emo is a little ignorant or otherwise naive if you have any clue what it is... I just call the music I listen to rock... Going any further is just being over analytical and it takes a lot of the enjoyment out of the music you loved trying to tag a genre onto it... Bright Eyes (a band referred to as being "emo" and also a band I love) once wrote in a song... "I think you've lost what you've loved in that mess of details..." In my opinion he is talking about the label "emo"... People have over analyzed this music so much that has taken the fun out for them... Most people don't like "emo" for the simple fact that they think it is just emotional teen-agers crying over their failed attempts at love with acoustic guitars backing them up... I think most of them got that idea from the band Dashboard Confessionals... I'm not trying to rag on them but all those times they were on MTV made me look at them a little different... The critics started calling bands "emo" in the summer of 1985 (or somewhere near there... go to www.fourfa.com for better history)... Bands like Rites of Spring and Moss Icon arose out of the D.C. hardcore scene... Critics noticed their heart felt and emotional lyrics along with Rites of Spring's almost silent whispers only to be followed by ear blasting emotion... Thus they labeled them "emo"... I like most of the bands that are labeled "emo" so I'm not trying to bring them down any... I just don't like the term "emo"... I once used it to describe myself and the music I listen to... Now I like to think I am wiser in my ways and I don't need a label to make me feel a place of security... This has been my pure opinion and if you like to call yourself or the music you love emo then so be it... Just don't forget the reason music is here... Enjoy!

hey..um..the reason the get up kids and dashboard are called emo is because there lyrics are about relationships and growing up and stuff like that and that is what emo is...if you dont want to think emo is a genre then more power to you...but there kinda has to be an emo genre...otherwise how would you describe certain bands..my email is.. squall534@hotmail.com

Thanks for visiting the site nathan... Emo, to me, is more like a stereo-type... I get called "emo kid" at school... I just believe that music, not just emo, shouldn't be a thing to worry about classifying... Just let it be what it is... Wich is either good or bad... See Ya Later!
