The Igniter

- An igniter is the device used to ignite a rocket engine.

- Its a loop of fine gauge nichrome wire coated in pyrogen.

- When a small current is applied the wire heats up and the pyrogen ignites the motor.

Pyrogen

- Pyrogen is the main chemical involved in the ignition

- It is an non-toxic solid that remains stable until electrically or thermally activated.

- It is used for rockets because after it ignites the rocket, it produces a gas-like extinguishing aerosol preventing explosions or fires.

- The aerosol attacks the fire chemically giving virtually instant extinguishment & prevents re-ignition.

- It is used by firemen to extinguish fires.
