TECHNOLOGY
Talk about something where you have to take the good with the bad. Advances in all kinds of technology have made some aspects of life in the new millennium pretty amazing. Certain diseases have been beaten. If someone’s kidney or liver gives out, it doesn’t mean their life is over. When it comes to entertainment…oh, man, the advances are endless. If I want to find an obscure demo song by the Smashing Pumpkins, there are numerous file-sharing programs that can help me get it. Now I can go to the movies and see comic book heroes like Spider-Man, X-men, Daredevil, and the Incredible Hulk brought to life with real actors (mixed, of course, with some CGI). And if I want to slip inside the role of a covert ops agent I can stick SPLINTER CELL in my Xbox.
So life is more entertaining…if you can live to enjoy it because, while there are all these neat things going on, we’ve also had our share of bad. Right now there are stockpiles of weapons sitting around the world that could kill millions of people in the blink of an eye. If it’s mandatory that with the free downloads I have to also accept weapons of mass destruction…well, needless to say I’d rather not be able to get that rare song.
It seems to me the main problem is scientists are like a bunch of toddlers, in terms of curiosity. They see a door and charge right through it just because they can, and they don’t seem to be aware that there may be very negative consequences. It’s more comfortable for me to believe they aren’t aware…because if they DO realize the results and don’t care…man, I don’t even know how to begin dealing with that.
