IDIOT MUSIC FANS, IDIOT MUSICIANS

A few months ago I was perusing a messageboard dedicated to the first and best alt-country band: the Jayhawks. I came across a thread with the subject line, “Sound problems with the new album?” This was referring to the release of RAINY DAY MUSIC, which came out on April 4, 2003. I clicked on this thread and the initial message said the following:

I love the new album, but there's something about the vocals that's catching my attention. Does anyone else think they sound like they're a little....well, fried? I'm not a sound technician, so I don't know the technical terms here, but it's kind of like the sound your speakers make when your amp is turned up too high...sort of a frayed, frazzled sound. Except I'm hearing this on the vocals no matter how soft or loud I'm playing the record. I hear it on my stereo, on my iPod, even on my shower radio/CD player.

I posted a reply in which I agreed with this young man because I had also picked up on this annoying sound. It’s an occurrence called “clipping.” This is how I explained it:

I noticed a sound problem too. Sometimes it sounds like there's a buzzing/scratching noise that shouldn't be there. This is called "clipping." It was a problem many people think is present on the debut album for Billy Corgan's new band Zwan. I will try to describe it as best I can here:

If you were to open up one of the song files in an audio editing program such as Soundforge or Goldwave, the song would be represented by a bunch of peaks and valleys. Naturally, the very tip of the peak should come to a point. However, if the peak is flat then that means the sound has been "clipped" and that's when you will get the buzzing noise.

Hope that helps. I'm not sure how many of you know what I'm talking about with the peaks and valleys thing, but I gave it a try LOL.

A couple replies after mine, some moron wrote this:

It's fucking ART!! there are no rules, they can do whatever they want. Listen closely to the guitar on "Saigon" by John Prine or to some Rolling Stones albums if you you think there is a problem here, you'll shit. I think the album is a classic.

What a fucking douche bag! I believe in artistic freedom, but when it comes to giving your fans an album that sounds like shit…well, I’m sorry but there is no excuse for that. I didn’t sit through my hellish job so I could spend money on a crappy CD. Since we’re the whole reason musicians can even exist, the least they should do is give us a decent product. They are subservient to US, not the other way around! I doubt the Jayhawks delivered a bad CD on purpose (they don’t seem like the kind of band that would screw their fans over) but it’s nice to know that, even if they did, there are retards like the guy who wrote that reply who would bend over and take it anyway.

Unfortunately, this stupidity exists on both sides. Apparently, just like some fans, bands can forget who is subservient to whom. I remember a particular episode of 120 Minutes on MTV when the lead singer of this suck-ass band called Dramarama was talking about one of their shit songs “Anything Anything” (actually it’s the closest to a decent song they have in their catalog). The singer was talking about song meanings, and he said, “Well this fan came up to me and said he loved ‘Anything Anything.’ He said to me, ‘Yeah that song totally sounds like my life, like you wrote it about me.’ And I thought to myself, ‘Well, uh…it’s about Me, but…okay.’”

I don’t know what the fuck that singer’s problem is. If the fan thought it sounded like his life, so fucking what? Let him interpret it that way! After all Dramarama should be glad that anyone can identify with their songs because they suck and don’t even deserve a fan base of five people. Just smile and say “thank you,” you musical prick!

Stupid musician pricks. We support their asses so they can jerk off in a band and avoid having real jobs. They should shut the fuck up and let us interpret their songs as we see fit...you know, as it relates to our lives. As long as we keep enjoying their music, what the hell do they care?
