We are students from Farragut Career Academy and we were selected to present a service project on racial profiling and discrimination. The goal of our project on racial was to teach and interact with a sixth-grade class. Facts about racial profiling and discrimination against those of Muslim and of Arab descent were discussed. During the discussion we talked about prejudices of the past as well as those that still exist today. We wanted to present to the students how racial profiling and discrimination is in everyone's daily life and how it can affect our minds, judgments and actions. We also addressed some of the stereotypes and criticisms toward others.
Nineteen students, including the two representatives from Farragut, went to Kanoon Elementary school for two days we explained what racial profiling is as well as, full and partial profiling. We engaged in role-playing and performed skits about these issues. Finally we solicited the children's perspectives concerning these issues.
Our class developed and promoted this service project by reading the suggested service projects in the Constitutional Rights resouces guide. We decided to combine the first and the second suggestions. From this project we learned that working with younger children is challenging, but it was a goal that we successfully accomplished.
This project looked excellent in theory, but the implementations of it was rather difficult. The children participated in our "post workshop" and they informed us of what they'd learned. We found that this project was well worth the difficult work and research. We, as a class, had the opportunity to share our opinions and ideas. At times we disagreed and debated, but we resolved our differences. Mr. Charles Kuner's class got to know each other a little better and share extraordinary experiences. Going to Kanoon Elementary school and presenting this service project was an incredible experience for everyone, one we will never forget!
