Marquette University Jazz Ensembles

Music with Soul. Why does that apply to the Jazz Ensembles?

Simple. Jazz music has always been described as having soul. And the students at Marquette have so much soul, they need two Jazz Ensembles to express it all.

The two Jazz Ensembles are divided up not based on ability, but availability. One ensemble meets at 4:00 in the afternoon, the other at 7:00 at night. This allows a greater chance for students to be in one or the other without other conflicts.

Some members have been playing jazz for years, others for weeks. It doesn't matter, as each member has the soul required to play jazz, not to mention ability and desire. Listen to the solos; you can hear the soul pouring out.

The members of the Jazz Ensembles have deep appreciation for music of yesteryear: big band, swing, early R&B, ballads, jazz, and even modern jazz. Consisting of saxophones, trombones, trumpets, a rhythm section, and maybe even a vocalist, these students can transport you back in time to different eras.

In past years, the Jazz Ensembles have played songs by Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Sammy Nestico, and Herbie Hancock, to name a few. Just a few titles that have been featured include "In The Mood", "Satin Doll", "A Night in Tunisia", "Stompin at the Savoy", "Time After Time", and "I've Got You Under My Skin."

Also, to help spread the soul around, each year Marquette University hosts an annual Jazz Invitational for area high schools. Each band will play a few selections then have the opportunity to be critiqued and complimented. And to hopefully entice some of them to come to Marquette, both of our Jazz Ensembles will perform as well.

So come listen to the soul of the MU Bands -- you might even learn where today's music comes from.
