ME-163 Quick Build Guide

I recently took delivery of the S&B models (Australian) ME 163-C komet Speed 400 Electric and
slope soaring PSS ARC kit. For more info see:

http://www.sbrcmodels.com/

I must add that when I received the kit, the following pictures show what it really is... ARC
Almost Ready to Cover.

The Kit is semi-scale and it is ALREADY FULLY BUILT FOR YOU. I have never seen any other
reasonably priced EPP /FOAM combo kit that is of this quality. The kit is of VERY HIGH QUALITY
of finish and all you need to do is to decorate the model...  Out of the box it can be admired for hours!!

A REAL ARC EPP /FOAM KIT (Leading EDGE IS EPP, Rest is foam)

I did not glue this, it came pre-shaped and glued

Speed 400/480 holes PRE-SHAPED and CUT and also PRE-REINFORCED

Canopy , decals and motor mount pre shaped and cut for you.

As I build the model, I will continue to update this page..
This is the most scale looking and enjoyable kit I have ever received.

NO SANDING EPP LIKE MAD, EVERYTHING IS DONE FOR YOU

Cover , install the radio and FLY!!!!!!!!!!!

Construction Quick Build Guide

My OWN version of the ME163C will be a little different. Due to my own requirements

The goal is to make a TWO PIECE model for easy travel to other countries for flying
I also required a BEEPER to be installed in case the model goes missing in the brush.

The starboard back is used for POWER CABLES and the port back is used to route servo wires for the wings.
A DREMEL router attachment is used to route the EPP foam. This will keep the two kinds of wiring apart.

Route holes for the BEEPER and the Wing Aileron Servos.
Beeper is located after the servo connectors.

In my case the whole wing is removable.

Preparation for spray painting

Sand with 500 Grit sandpaper, Also sand the 3m Strapping tape surfaces
Apply Tamiya Primer to the 3m Strapping tape surfaces.

** for a Two Piece model the green packing tape must be
secured using 3M fiberglass tape. **

MASK all important places, servo wire jacks, canopy area.

Using a HEAT GUN CAREFULLY SHRINK the packing tape
wear a monocoat covering glove to protect your hand.

The tape will Shrink very very nicely!! Use caution at all times and
keep moving the heat gun ,lest you melt the foam!

Now we are ready to do spray painting.

On the left is a HVLP (High volume low pressure) spray system which can cover a large
area quickly without spraying atomized paint all over the shop like an Airbrush.

The model is finally painted , all masking has been removed.

Apply Decals and Panel lines, then SPRAY with Thinner based VARISH to protect
the paint work. When applying the PAPER DECALS, make sure the DECALS are properly
STUCK WITH GLUE BEFORE VARNISHING.

This is the model upside down with the 4 points for
taping down the wings using 3m Strapping fiberglass tape.

Note spare sullivan pushrod for receiver wire, You can also use
a DEAN's vertical short antenna. However if you build the mode as
a ONE PIECE model you can thread the receiver wire into the wing.

Model is now ready to fly

FLYING PERFORMANCE

Power system::

  • Speed 400 6V

  • Graupner 6 x 6.5 Speed Prop

  • 7 and 8 X 500 AR

Preflight checks.

1) Make sure you have 4-5 degrees of REFLEX (up ailerons)

1B) Make sure the CG is 135 MM measured from the leading edge attached
to the fuselage, approximate balance is OK, not critical.

1C) Check to makes sure both ailerons have the same amount of reflex,
otherwise model will flip over when launched.

2) I suggest 8x500 AR for hand launching in ANY CONDITION like windless day on
     flat ground.

2a) Use 7x500AR ONLY if you

  •     Have someone else launch for you

  •     Have a pedal Launcher

  •     Have strong head wind

  •     Launch from a slope.

3) Launch first then give full throttle and model will climb away.

4) Head into the wind and climb , the model will keep climbing very well

5) Chop the throttle and let the model glide, adjust the reflex until it is gliding
     level.

6) Later after landing , you may want to mix the throttle with elevator to
make it automatically reduce reflex when it is on full throttle.

The model performs VERY VERY well, It will blow away the Speed 400 Zagi
You can turn on a dime and out turn the speed 400 zagi anytime to come in
for the kill. The Zagi tends to go out of control during certain bank angles.

If you are looking for semi scale killer looks and a model that flies very very well
go for it..

All the GAS flyers kept looking up at the sky in disbelief!

This is one great model and I give it a rating of 10/10 ****
