CODE 18 – The story

When Claudia Vella’s car splutters to a mysterious halt in Marlborough

In south west England, dismay turns to amazement as she finds every vehicle in the high street similarly stricken. So too is every shop and store. Claudia, the boss of a computer firm, is exhilarated as she realizes they are victims of a unique electromagnetic attack. But events assume a darker aspect when, on the same day, a woman is shot dead on her doorstep, and Claudia finds herself the chief suspect in the investigation of the electronic wipeout.

The attack was the work of an American gang. The criminals planned to extort $40 million from Wall Street but, following the attack of September 11 2001, they have switched their attention to the City of London.

Claudia and the murdered woman’s son, James Gregson, who set out to clear her name by tracking down the gang, also make discoveries about each other. But they inadvertently set in motion a sequence of events that leads to more vicious murders, takes the gang leader to the French Riviera, Spain’s Costa del Sol, Gibraltar and Moscow, and puts the whole criminal enterprise at risk before the story reaches a sparkling yet macabre conclusion.

‘The chilling thing about this novel is that it is science fact. It dominated my late evening reading slot for three nights in a row.’

knowledge not only of the

technology sector but also

state-of-the-art weaponry.

This background, along with his close familiarity with Code 18’s locations in England, France, Spain, Gibraltar and Russia, adds to the authenticity of this cutting-edge crime novel, which is also a story of complex emotions and desires.

A tactical flair for contract bridge, for which he is a qualified teacher, is indicative of his analytical and imaginative mind, and this too is reflected in his writing–a life-long passion.

Charles Dodd often finds inspiration on his many travels. For the rest of the year, he lives in Southern Spain with his artist wife and golden retriever.

‘Favourite novels? There are too many to mention. A few that come immediately to mind are Joseph Heller’s Catch 22, the title of which I tried to echo in Code 18 by way of homage; Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, which I last read much too long ago; Lionel Davidson’s Kolymsky Heights, hypnotic from first page to last; Harlan Coben’s Tell No One, a 21st century page-turner; John le Carre’s The Constant Gardener, which tells us more than many a text book; Evelyn Waugh’s Scoop, still the best tale about journalism after all this time; and almost anything by P G Wodehouse, who does that magical thing of making us laugh.’

CODE 18 – E-bombs

‘Today there is almost universal dependence on electronic computers. They are used by first-graders as well as research engineers. Industry, communications, financial records are all at stake here. In the event of heavy EMP (electromagnetic pulse) radiation, I suspect it would be easier to enumerate the apparatus that would continue to function than the apparatus that would stop.’

Edward Teller, the father of the H-bomb, 1982

Notwithstanding Edward Teller’s dire warning, few of us know much about e-bombs. The prologue to Code 18, with its description of the power of an electromagnetic shock wave, comes as a surprise to some readers. Until weapons of this type were deployed in Iraq, there were those who denied their existence.

The devices come in various types. Those used by the criminals in Code 18 are usually called electromagnetic pulse or ultrawideband weapons. Not surprisingly, they generate electromagnetic pulses and cover a broad frequency range, the latter feature making them very difficult to guard against.

What damage can they do? As described in Code 18, the weapons crash computers, halt vehicles, disrupt power and communications, and disable security systems. They can even spark the explosive vapour in aircraft fuel tanks. As well as being used by criminals and the military, e-bombs are also available to terrorists.

Shouldn’t you know more about these weapons? Shouldn’t you read Code 18? There’s no more entertaining way to get yourself up to speed.

ELECTROMAGNETIC WEAPONRY HITS THE STREETS

Local Author Turns to Crime

Electromagnetic weapons were part of the armaments in Iraq, and an unusually topical crime novel is the first to lift the lid on this technology. Written by local author Charles Dodd, the book – Code 18 – is officially published next month (June).

The weapons fry all electronic circuitry within range. They halt traffic, crash computers, disarm security systems, and disable communications and power supplies. That much is fact.

The novel, which includes scenes in Gibraltar and Sotogrande, where the author lives, opens with the electronic wipeout of Marlborough in England. A trillion watts of power are let loose, bringing the city centre to a standstill.

The attack was a dummy run. The gang responsible for the wipeout is planning to extort £40 million from merchant banks in the City of London. But its leader, who is hounded by the Russian mafia as the result of a Costa del Sol property scam, finds his whole enterprise at risk as the story races towards a convincing yet macabre conclusion.

Leading British experts on electromagnetic pulsed power, Professor Ivor Smith and Dr Bucur Novac of Loughborough University, comment: ‘Beware! This is not science fiction. Charles Dodd has excelled with this fascinating and spine-tingling novel – truly the stuff of tomorrow.’ / MORE
