The attack was
the work of an American gang. The
criminals planned to extort $40 million from Wall Street but, following the
attack of
Claudia and
the murdered woman’s son, James Gregson, who set out to clear her name by
tracking down the gang, also make discoveries about
each other. But they inadvertently set
in motion a sequence of events that leads to more vicious murders, takes the
gang leader to the French Riviera, Spain’s Costa del Sol, Gibraltar and Moscow,
and puts the whole criminal enterprise at risk before the story reaches a
sparkling yet macabre conclusion.
‘Beware! This is not science fiction. Charles Dodd has excelled with this novel. Fascinating and spine-tingling – it is truly
the stuff of tomorrow.’

‘The
chilling thing about this novel is that it is science fact. It dominated my late evening reading slot for
three nights in a row.’

‘Favourite novels? There are too
many to mention. A few that come
immediately to mind are Joseph Heller’s Catch
22, the title of which I tried to echo in Code 18 by way of homage;
Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World,
which I last read much too long ago; Lionel Davidson’s Kolymsky Heights, hypnotic from first page to last; Harlan Coben’s Tell No One, a 21st century
page-turner; John le Carre’s The Constant
Gardener, which tells us more than many a text book; Evelyn Waugh’s Scoop, still the best tale about
journalism after all this time; and almost anything by P G Wodehouse, who does
that magical thing of making us laugh.’

E-bombs
‘Today there is almost universal dependence on electronic
computers. They are used by
first-graders as well as research engineers.
Industry, communications, financial records are all at stake here. In
the event of heavy EMP (electromagnetic pulse) radiation, I suspect it would be
easier to enumerate the apparatus that would continue to function than the
apparatus that would stop.’
Edward Teller, the father of the H-bomb, 1982
Notwithstanding
Edward Teller’s dire warning, few of us know much about e-bombs. The prologue
to Code

comes as a surprise to some readers. Until weapons of this type were deployed

The
devices come in various types. Those used by the criminals in Code
18 are usually called electromagnetic pulse or ultrawideband weapons.
Not surprisingly, they
generate electromagnetic pulses and cover a broad frequency range,
the latter feature making them very difficult to guard against.
What
damage can they do? As described in Code
18, the weapons crash computers, halt vehicles, disrupt power and
communications, and disable security systems.
They can even spark the explosive vapour in aircraft fuel tanks. As well as being used by criminals and the
military, e-bombs are also available to terrorists.
Shouldn’t
you know more about these weapons? Shouldn’t
you read Code 18? There’s no more entertaining way to get yourself up to speed.
