Record label: Mercury (France)
Release date: 5 April 2001
For over 30 years, Serge Gainsbourg made music of a provocative and openly sexual variety, at times stirring up controversy with his releases. He recorded songs with actresses like Jane Birkin and Brigitte Bardot, and quickly established himself as the ultimate artistic prankster of his day. He's been sampled by some, praised by many, and is an influence to countless musicians and songwriters. French pop wouldn't be the same without him. Earlier this year, his entire catalog was re-released and a special tribute album was made, this time placing Gainsbourg in a musical climate he would have felt right at home…today's underground electronic music.
Electronicagainsbourg contains remixes of Serge's work by some of the best artists and producers in the business: Bob Sinclar, The Orb, Howie B., Readymade, Stratus, Snooze, Chateau Flight, Faze Action, and several others. From bangin' house to sleazy new wave, from minimal thumpers to bachelor pad downtempo, all topped off with lush female vocals and Serge's sexy growl. I'd like to think he'd approve of this - it's one of the best remix projects to come out this year.
