MM4.1S

These speakers were intended to be used as surround speakers in my home theater setup.  Originally they were going to use some shielded 3-1/2" woofers, but I fried one of the voice coils when soldering the wires to the terminals.  As a result, I now always use terminal connectors rather than soldering.  I found some cheap 4" shielded woofers from Parts Express that had incredible power handling.  The tweeters were cheapo 3/8" mylar domes, also from Parts Express.  The only crossover component is a X.X mF cap on the tweeter.  The cabinet is incredibly simple - just a 4-1/2"x7-1/4x4-1/2" (WxHxD) box made from 1/2" plywood.  All of the joints are half-lapped dados that were just glued together.  (Try that with particle board!)  These guys were whipped together very quickly.

When I first fired them up, I was quite surprised at their sound.  Obviously, there isn't much bass, but oddly enough, quite a bit more than I expected.  I have them mounted on the walls as surrounds, which is an excellent use for them.  Because of the small drivers, they are fairly directional, so for a more difuse sound, the drivers could easily be used in a dipole configuration.  If you try this, you might want to try switching the phase of the drivers.  These speakers could also be used as computer speakers alone with good results.  They could also be matched with a powered sub cut off around 90Hz for a very nice sub/satellite setup.  Five of these little boogers and a sub would make an incredible home theater system.  They are very open and offer great imaging.  The midrange is particularly impressive.
