***************************************************** ***************************************************** Unknown Enemy FAQ Last modified: Thu Jan 16 18:26:20 2003 ***************************************************** ***************************************************** ***************************************************** The Game ***************************************************** Running the Game Simply run Unknown Enemy.exe, this will bring up Unknown Enemys Launcher from here you can run the game, run the fiction viewer, change the options, uninstall Unknown Enemy or view this file. The first thing you should do is run the fiction viewer and read the introductory fiction. The next step is to configure Unknown Enemy so you should select options, for more details on these see Section Options. The CIC Room Unknown Enemy has a new CIC room, from here you can access the History, Save, Load and Ship Profile terminals, there is also a Simulator pod with 10 all new Sim missions. When you are done exploring the CIC room you can enter through the main doors into the briefing room where you will recieve an ICIS briefing before launch. ***************************************************** The Story ***************************************************** Fiction Viewer As with Secret Ops the majority of the story in Unknown Enemy is progressed using a Fiction Viewer, fortunatley Unknown Enemys does not require you to be connected to the internet however it is still not accessible from inside the game. Whilst the game is still playable without the fiction viewer we HIGHLY recommend following the fiction closley as it is a significant part of Unknown Enemy and we believe it will greatly add to your enjoyment. At the end of each mission you will be provided with a password, make a note of it as it will be neccessary to access the fiction for the next mission, once the mission is complete you should quit and run the fiction viewer, accessing the next missions fiction using the password with which you were just provided. If you ignore the fiction you will miss many mission clues, details and the majority of the plot. ***************************************************** Options ***************************************************** Rendering Modes Firstly run Unknown Enemy.exe and then select Options. From here you can choose the Rendering Method, Resoloution and whether or not to enable the distance patch which disables the popup of the game. Which options you should select depend on your system, the rendering method will effect both the graphical quality but not all modes are supported by every card, check with your manufacturer if you are unsure. Glide is only for 3DFX users, if you do not have a 3DFX card we recommend using Direct3D and only resorting to Software mode if you are experiencing difficulties. Increasing the resoloution and enabling the distance patch will reduce the games performance but for those with a powerful system the visual benefits will be very noticeable. Be careful with the asteroid viewing distance. On full this can bring a 2GHz machine to its knees. ***************************************************** Troubleshooting ***************************************************** ***************************************************** Game not working/crashing ***************************************************** The fiction viewer does not work - I get error messages about missing files. The fiction viewer does not show any fiction. Unfortunately there has been a bug with the first release of UE. Download the fiction viewer patch here: http://www.nolimitclan.com/ue/viewer_reg.exe Unknown Enemy crahes, reporting that 'enemy.srs' is missing. You have to install UE into the _same_ folder as Secret Ops. No files of Secret Ops will get overwritten. The game crashes when I scan a freighter in Mission 1 (Prelude). Install the Secret Ops speechpack. I'm having trouble in software mode... A cutscene crashes in software mode Software mode has difficulty handling the stress which UE exerts on the game engine. At the same time, if your computer is incapable of supporting the Direct 3D mode, then it may be too slow for UE anyway. I'm in Windows 2000 and I get the error 'wcue caused an error in wcue.exe'. Unfortunately, Secret Ops does not work with Windows 2000, and therefore, neither does Unknown Enemy. With some work Windows 2000 can be tricked to offer a compatibility mode like Windows XP does. While it seems not to be as stable as with XP you might want to give this a try. Check http://www.petri.co.il/application_compatibility_tool.htm for details on how to activate compatibility mode in Windows 2000. I'm in Windows XP and I get the error 'wcue caused an error in wcue.exe'. Right click on wcue.exe, select the compatibility tab, and set it to Windows95 or Windows98/XP. Then click ok and try again. ***************************************************** Other questions/problems ***************************************************** I used a Windows shortcut combination to switch from UE to a different task, and when I went back to UE, it all looked really messed up. Unfortunately, this does happen if you use the 32-bit Direct3D mode with UE. The only solution is simply not to use the shortcut combinations to get out of UE. This should only be an issue in Windows XP, because the game will prevent you from using the shortcut combinations in Windows 95/98/ME. Help - the movies keep jumping Go into Start, Run and then type 'dxdiag.exe' on the sound tab set Hardware acceleration to zero. I've got the voice over patch but I don't hear some of the briefing voice overs or others. Go into Start, Run and then type 'dxdiag.exe' on the sound tab set Hardware acceleration to zero. How do I delete my save games? You need to delete the following files: autosaveue.gsw replayue.gsw scoreu.sim and the directories: saveue historyue In 800*600 and 1024*768 some of the menus are surrounded by black borders. This is normal, these patches were made without the Source code, centering the menus in higher resoloutions was deemed the best solution. Why do the stars shine through the ships. What you see aren't stars, but space dust. This graphic effect is coded into the WCP/Secret Ops engine. Does UE work with Anti Aliasing? There is no option to enable Anti Aliasing in Secret Ops. If your graphic card supports the enabling of AA for all D3D or Glide applications then there should not be any problems however. Does UE Work with Shutterglasses? Our test with one brand of Shutterglasses led to instable gameplay and crashes. There is a chance that others might work. In any case the Secret Ops Engine does not handle shutterglasses well, so it probably should be avoided anyhow. ***************************************************** Mission Problems ***************************************************** I'm on the mission 'First Strike' and have been asked to select which Nav point to goto and then nothing happens. The second mission ('First Strike') has a bug at waypoint 3. No autopilot light appears after you've cleared out the waypoint. This is the mission where your navmap gets updated... You have to open up the nav map (Ctr-N) and then right click on one of the 2 nav points you were asked to choose from. At the end of the campaign, the crew of the Dauntless seems to have more kills than the crew of the Midway did... For pilots that do not participate in the player's mission, the game randomly boosts the killscore, using the player's kills for that particular mission as the baseline. This means, unfortunately, that if you get 20 kills (as is frequently the case in UE), many of the other pilots will get similar amounts of kills. That adds up pretty quickly... ;) Why don't I get a password screen for the Mission 10B fiction? There seems to be a limit on the number of splash screens SO can use. UE happens to have one password more than that limit allows for. So, the password for the Mission 10B fiction is presented as text at the end of Mission 9. The cutscene 'No One Can Hear You...' sometimes ends early, and sometimes looks messed up. That's what we get for doing a cutscene in an asteroid field. It seems that the asteroid field is not always generated the same way. So, sometimes, you'll have asteroids get in the way of the ships involved in the scene. While in most cases, the scene should still work properly, we have programmed it to end early in the most extreme cases. If this happens, simply try viewing it again. I'v got a problem that is not covered in the FAQ Any other errors or questions please report to the Unknown Enemy Forum at http://www.crius.net/zone/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=11
