It is usual for astronomers to measure the extent to which an object is moving away from the observer and for this reason only redshift is referred to; if an object is approaching the observer it is said to have a negative redshift rather than a blueshift since this means only one reference is needed for objects moving towards and away from an observer. This makes comparison easier, in particular graphical representation.
