The most important questions to ask yourself when choosing a contraceptive are:
1.Is it possible that you may want children in the future?
2.Are you in a stable, monogamous relationship, without
concern for possible infidelity?
3.Are you willing to take hormones?
The main options are depicted below:
The main options can be divided into two main categories.
Firstly, options which are considered permanent, and Secondly, options which are temporary, allowing for future pregnancy.
Permanent forms of birth control consist primarily of obliterating the tubes that carry the reproductive cells in the man or the women. When these tubes are interrupted in the man the procedure is called a vasectomy. In the women, the procedure is commonly known as a tubal, or tubal ligation.
The temporary methods of birth control can be further divided into four categories,
1.Hormones
2.Barriers
3.IUDs
4.Other
1.Hormones
There are three types of hormonal contraception
presently available:
Birth Control Pills (Pills that are taken orally every day)
Depo Provera (An injection given once every three months)
Norplant (An implant consisting of little tubes placed under the skin)
2.Barrier Contraception
Male Condoms
Female Condoms
Diaphragms
Cervical Caps
3.IUDs
Paragaurd T380
Progestasert
4.Other
Spermacides
Foams/ Creams
Cycle Timing
Abstinence
It is very important to remember that most forms of birth control do not adequately protect you from sexually transmitted diseases (STD's). Abstinence (not having sex) is the only sure method of prevention. Barrier methods work well, however, they are not infallible. It is possible for condoms to break, and they do not full protect the uncovered areas, such as the scrotum and vulva, where STD's are possible as well. Some condoms which are made of natural products, may allow the passage of infection through the condom membrane.
There are presently many new methods of preventing unwanted pregnancy under investigation, including gels and glues that will obliterate the tubes of men and women who do not desire future child bearing. In addition, an oral contraceptive for men is under development and may be available in the next few years.
