Condoms (also know as rubbers and prophylactics) are
barriers which prevent the passage of sperm to the uterus.
They are most often made of latex and fit over the man's penis
prior to intercourse. Usually the condom covers the shaft and
the head of the man's genitalia. It does not cover the scrotum or
inguinal area. Because of this it is still possible to transmit
certain kinds of sexually transmitted disease, although unlikely.
Syphilis, ulcerative diseases such as herpes, condyloma or
genital warts and Molluscum Contagiosum can be spread in
this manner. Condoms also can break and allow semen to flow
into the vagina. Under these circumstances it would even be
possible to transmit HIV or the AIDs virus. Condoms work well
but are not perfect forms of contraception. If pregnancy is not
desired than a backup method should be considered.
The condom for women fits like a diaphragm in the vagina and
still covers the outer genitalia of the woman. The labia and
perineum are areas which have been traditionally very
susceptible to infectious sexually transmitted disease. The
women's condom seems to protect these areas better than
other forms of birth control except for abstinence.
The condom for women tends to break less often than the male
condom and many men state that it is more comfortable.
Recently a condom for women has been developed. It works
well. It is unfortunately more expensive than the male condom.
Because of unfamiliarity with this new condom men and women
have not been as interested in it's use.
Some men (and fewer women) will complain that the condom is
uncomfortable and intrusive to the act of love making. This is,
of coarse, the decision of consenting adults.
Most importantly, the female condom allows women to be
proactive in their use of barrier contraception and should be
seriously considered.
