Serial Experiments Lain is an unconventional, surreal anime series basically about a girl, her computer, and the complications that arise. It is beautifully animated with incredible sound, music and an intellegent plot. Lain takes place in the "Present day Present time", in wealthy urban Japan. The main character, Lain is a shy, quiet junior highschool student whose life becomes caught up in the "wired", or a futuristic version of the internet. It begins when one of her classmates, Chisa, commits suicide, but later Lain, and many other girls (she goes to an all girls school) get e-mails from the dead girl. "I have only trascended my body",she says,"I still live here..." Slowly Lain becomes more interested in the wired, and developes a second, much wilder, personality, and bizzare troubles follow her. Lain is not for everybody. You have to really be able to understand philosphy, indirect forms of logic, and sensitivity. It can be soothing, bizzare, and often shocking or disturbing, but it is always inspiring . Lain is more focused on drama and intrigue, than on action or violence, but the messages it sends about the effects communications have on post-modernist life are universal.
