S T Y L E
As a general rule, I tend to avoid playing anything that's become a week-to-week "standard", per se. After all, one of the reasons I started DJing was to break away from the monotony and repetition many club nights suffer from. That's not to say that I won't spin the more well known artists alongside the lesser known ones, however I tend to favor rare tracks, B-sides, and tracks that recieve little club play to the "classics". I really enjoy some of those "club classics", so there will be occasions where I'll bust one out just for fun, but that's only every now and then.
Atmosphere and a sense of flow are two things I highly value in my sets. I enjoy spinning a variety of genres over the course of an evening, but try very hard to present the material without falling into the boring, awkward "block system" in which a DJ will play several songs of the same genre and then abruptly and ungracefully begin another "block" of an entirely different genre with no real transition. Often, at the beginning or very end of a night (depending on how much time I am alloted), I like to spin some interesting dark ambient or medieval material to get a sense of mood going and take it from there. In general, I favor electronic genres that are dancy without compromising their dark qualities and I have a personal preference for harsher material. This, however, does not mean that my tastes aren't varied... there are many things I like to include in my sets.
Lastly, I thought I would address two subjects I'm commonly asked about - Yes, I am able to beatmatch and yes, I do take requests. Beatmatching is definitely something I don't live and die by. I will most certainly beatmatch a set focusing on hard trance or something similar, but generally avoid strict beatmatching during sets focusing on EBM, darkwave, etc. I'll do it sometimes, but tend to find it a pain in the ass for multiple reasons (an abundance of intros/outros, lack of a standard beat, etc). As for requests, although I have a flair for the unusual, I do want the crowd to have a good time and am willing to play their requests. However, I will mainly do so if the song requested fits in with the feel and continuum of the set or if the song isn't excessively overplayed (for example, don't ask me for "Headhunter" by Front 242).
