Summer 2000: Research Experience for Undergraduates
(Physics REU), Kansas State
Summer 2000: Certified in Vacuum Science and Technology,
Kansas
State
Summers 1997, 1998, 1999: University
Research Glassware, Carrboro, NC (manufacturer of scientific glassware
and air sampling equipment). Designed and wired control circuits, tested
/ assembled electrical equipment and vacuum pumps.
School Years, 1999-2001: Chemical Stockroom / Teaching
Assistant, Guilford College
Summer 1999: UNC Physics Dept. Designed and
built a demonstration Tesla coil.
VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES
Habitat for Humanity -- worked on 3 houses,
including one week-long intensive
Child care in church
Occasional volunteer at local soup kitchen / homeless
shelter
Electrical demonstrations at elementary school
“Science Night”
Chemistry / Math tutoring
INTERESTS / HOBBIES
Electronics, esp. high-voltage (Tesla
coils, etc.) and radio transmitting and receiving circuits; experiments
with plasmas and glow-discharge phenomena, microwaves, television repair;
recent projects include several vacuum-tube type
Tesla coils of my own design, a radio-frequency lighting system, and
wireless power-transmission experiments. Microwave plasma-chemistry project;
Railgun
propulsion.
Chemical experimentation. I enjoy combining electronics
and chemistry to do interesting projects, including an investigation of
the reaction of nitrogen with sulfur in a plasma to form compounds (1998-present),
and making a machine that uses an electric discharge to make nitric acid
from the air (1997). I am currently studying the principles of pyrotechnic
chemistry at Guilford College.
My lab area at home is equipped with high-vacuum
pumps, an oscilloscope and test equipment, and materials for glass fabrication.
