..:TWEAKING WINDOWS 98/ME:..

I am amazed at the amount of people who have NO IDEA that you can get 20%-30% performance increase out of their system just by changing some system settings in Windows 98/ME. I have taken the time to write up a page explaining how to do this. There are MANY other tweaks you can do to Windows BUT these ones are the most BASIC,performance enhancing tweaks, SO..LETS GET STARTED!

! NOTE: Always use the LEFT Mouse button in this procedure unless otherwise specified.!

FIRST click your "RIGHT" mouse button on the "My Computer" icon. THEN go down and click the mouse button on where it says "PROPERTIES". You will then see the "SYSTEM PROPERTIES window. THEN Click on the DEVICE MANAGER and find where it says "DISK DRIVES" and expand that menu by clicking on the (+) symbol to the left of it. Follow steps as depicted in the images below.

NEXT "RIGHT" click on the "IDE DRIVE" and click on "properties" which will give you the IDE properties window. Select the "SETTINGS TAB" and put a check mark in the "DMA" box by clicking on the white box. This will make a WARNING window pop up but just click "OK" or whatever to tell it you want to select DMA. It may ask you if you want to restart...DO NOT SELECT RESTART at ANY time during this operation, wait until we are all finished! NEXT click the OK button at the bottom of the popup window.

NEXT We will repeat this EXACT SAME process with the CD-ROM drive. [SEE IMAGES BELOW]

NOTE: This may NOT increase Performance with ALL CD-Rom drives,You may need to experiment with the DMA option to see which way works better with YOUR drive.

NEXT we will step up the amount of cache windows allows your system to have. In the system properties window, select the "PERFORMANCE" tab the the far right and then click on the "FILE SYSTEM" button. In the "HARD DISK" Settings, set your system as a NETWORK SERVER. Then click the "OK" button at the bottom. AND REMEMBER: DO NOT SELECT RESTART at ANY time during this operation!

<== TIP FOR WINDOWS ME. USERS ==>

Go over to the "TROUBLESHOOTING" tab and place a check by "DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE". This will save you HEAPS of hard drive space.
