Gilligan's Id
Ginger

Actress Ginger Grant is easily the most sex-starved of the seven castaways. She is the most eager to seduce every one of them, and even acts which could not usually be interpreted sexually find new (double) meaning in Ginger's roving body parts.

* Witness Ginger's endless series of seductive dialogues with Gilligan, which usually end with Gilligan backing into a pole (phallic imagery), bopping himself on the head, and knocking himself unconscious--at which point Ginger looks at the camera and shrugs (the final shudder of climax).

Other signs: In Episode 13, Ginger goes so far as to make a dress out of Gilligan's "S.S. Minnow" duffel bag (perhaps her effort to have Gilligan as close to her as possible?) In Episode 14, Ginger allows Gilligan to catch her in the shower (albeit with a towel around her) and seductively gives Gilligan a flower and "draws" a heart on his chest with her finger. In Episode 31, in her diary, Ginger writes a fantasy in which she frees Gilligan from bondage and subdues Gilligan's captor. In Episode 89, Ginger dresses as a nurse to do an "examination" of Gilligan (even though he is invisible!); later, she inadvertently strips Gilligan of his body-wrap bandage.

* Besides Gilligan, Ginger's most pronounced efforts at seduction are with the Professor. In Episode 51, while trying to show the Professor what kind of man a visiting millionairess is looking for, Ginger arouses the Professor to the point of his passionately kissing her. Episode 54 is where the Professor's desires are expressed most blatantly. Ginger tells the Professor to act as if she's Cary Grant--"Pretend that I'm tall and handsome and loaded with masculinity." The Professor responds, "It will be very easy to pretend that you're tall and handsome, but, er...you've got the wrong kind of load!"

* As for the other male castaways, Ginger usually spurns the Skipper's efforts to court her, but even he gets a kiss from her in Episode 42. In Episodes 54 and 67, Ginger cozies up to Mr. Howell quite handily, and in Episode 68, Ginger reveals herself to Mr. Howell, in Mrs. Howell's presence, in a skin-tight body suit that causes him to gasp.

* Ginger's worst luck seems to involve getting military officers aroused. Her very reason for taking the S.S. Minnow's initial three-hour tour was to escape a group of sailors who were harassing her after a stage show. In Episode 95, with an impending rescue in sight, Mary Ann expresses her delight at being picked up by sailors, to which Ginger responds, "It won't be the first time it's happened to me!"

* No one on the island dances as much as Ginger. In Episode 25, as a nightclub act, Ginger dances so enthusiastically that she causes waiter Gilligan to spill soup he was determined not to spill (phallic imagery). In Episode 73, Ginger performs a "native dance" to rouse the Professor from a spell. In Episode 94, she does a striptease with veils. Even in situations that don't call for dancing, Ginger never misses an opportunity to bump-and-grind. In Episode 2, where a fierce storm rocks the castaways' communal hut, Ginger backs up against the wall and grinds in a vibrating manner. In Episode 17, even with a gun at Mary Ann's head (via gangster Jackson Farrell), Ginger can't resist seductively shaking her body at a visiting gangster.

* Ginger is so sexually oriented that even seemingly innocent acts brand her as a slut. In Episode 23, when Ginger is trying to show the Skipper how to act as though he is in pain, she writhes on the ground and emits howls that sound like the act of orgasm. In Episode 41, when Gilligan offers Ginger a $50,000 I.O.U. so that she can join Mr. Howell's private club, Ginger misinterprets Gilligan's offer and slaps him twice for it.

* Ginger seems to have sublimated desires for bondage. In Episode 80, when Ginger is rescued from a kidnapper on the island, Ginger describes her brief time in captivity in graphic detail. Also, see the synopsis of Episode 82 below.

* Sometimes, Ginger's teasing ways backfire on her. In Episode 21, she is quite eager to make time with a visiting surfer, until he tries to pounce on her. In Episode 30, the Skipper gets amnesia, forgets his mannerly ways, kisses Ginger on the neck, and tries to have his way with her. In Episode 70, a Russian Gilligan lookalike turns the tables on Ginger and tries to seduce her. In Episode 72, Ginger dresses up as the ultimate sex symbol, Marilyn Monroe, in an attempt to seduce a visiting Broadway producer, but the producer mockingly laughs at her.

* Ginger eventually gets such a slutty reputation that she is often made to be humiliated. In Episode 22, the Professor sends Ginger to seduce a gorilla. In Episode 37, in an effort to save Gilligan from being killed by a native chief, Ginger is sent in to seduce him (miscegenation). In Episode 57, Ginger talks so seductively to a man-made, emotionless robot that it shows several signs of arousal (lighting up like a pinball machine, overheating, etc.). In this instance, besides displaying an amazing ability to arouse an emotionless machine, Ginger's behavior also suggests having an extraordinary skill with mechanical objects, particularly when she makes body contact with them.

* Ginger displays many signs of latent lesbianism. The most pronounced example is the continual nighttime sight of Ginger and Mary Ann sleeping in the same hut, dressed only in towels or oversized men's shirts. Also, in Episode 40, Ginger grabs Mrs. Howell's oversized diamond ring (reverse-phallic imagery).

* Episode 82, in which Ginger meets her drab doppelganger Eva Grubb, seems nothing less than Ginger's subconscious escaping and paying her back for her many teasing seductions. When drab Eva discovers that she exudes charisma only as Ginger Grant, she knocks Ginger unconscious and ties her up (bondage). When Eva loses her glasses, she inadvertently dances with Mrs. Howell (lesbianism) and causes Mr. Howell to spill champagne all over (phallic imagery). When Ginger escapes and exposes Eva's ruse, Eva issues a fake apology--looking as though she will return to Pandora's Box--and then leaves everyone behind on the island, leaving only a note that she will carry on in Hollywood as "the new Ginger Grant." Since the series never resolves this issue, we can only assume it's a subconscious fantasy of Ginger's.
