Chapter Five/Six: Rain Forever
Vegeta must have fallen asleep because the next thing he knew he was being awaken by the sound of thunder and lightning against the house. He quickly got up and closed the back door to keep the rain from pouring in. After that he walked back over to the table and sat down. He was still on edge from earlier that morning but he seem to be getting over it slowly. Vegeta looked down at the table, his eyes tracing the wood grains. Something did not feel right to him. He couldn’t explain it. He felt different now. Ever since Kakarott had told him those words everything changed. Vegeta let out a sigh before he heard the front door open. His eyes lit up thinking it was Kakarott as he quickly turned around but saw only Bra. She greeted him with a smile as she walked over and hugged him to say hello.
Vegeta smiled and then pulled away as he felt himself getting wet from Bra’s hair. She smiled and sat down at the table letting out a deep breath. She told him about her day, what she had done, all the things she had bought, and how many of his credit cards she had maxed out. Vegeta was glad she was home, even if he didn’t say it. He needed the company. After a few minutes of talking, Bra stopped. She got up to get herself something to drink.
“Where is Goku?” she asked as she started to turn on the stove to boil some tea.
“How should I know?” Vegeta said dryly as he looked away.
Bra turned around and looked at him, “Well he was living with us for a while. I was just wondering what had happened to him. What did you say to him this time?”
“I didn’t say anything to him!” Vegeta protested as he turned back to look at her.
His daughter just giggled hearing her father getting defensive, “Okay okay. I was just teasing daddy. I hope he’s not out there in that rain. It’s not good weather.”
“Tch, he can rot out there for all I care,” Vegeta said.
With that he got up and walked out of the room, heading upstairs to his bedroom. Bra turned to speak to him but then noticed he was gone. She finished boiling her tea and then poured herself a cup. She carried the cup over to the table and then sat down. As she took a sip of her tea she noticed a book in the garbage can. Not knowing what it was, she found it very odd that her father would throw a book away. She got up and walked over to the garbage can and picked it up. As she opened it she noticed a lot of the pages were illegible, like they had been marked out. She flipped through it and then came to an unscratched page.
Bra’s eyes widened as she read the information contained in the book. She closed it quietly as she stood in the kitchen. She stood there for a while but then her expression of surprise turned into a soft smile. She turned her head and looked over to the stairs. Laying the book down on the table, Bra made her way up the stairs. She went to her father’s door and knocked, patiently waiting until she heard him say it was okay to enter.
As she came in, Vegeta was sitting on the bed staring at the picture he had kept on his nightstand of the three of them, Trunks, her mother and her. Bra walked over and sat down beside him, wrapping her arms around his waist. She rested her head on his shoulder as she stared down at the picture too. They said nothing as the rain continued to pour outside, the lightning brightening the room every now and then.
“I miss mom,” Bra said quietly out loud.
Vegeta knew she had said it to break silence as he responded, “So do I.”
Bra knew she should not mention Trunks. That often tore her father to pieces when he thought about it. As she turned her head from the picture to him she watched his expression. The lightning flashed as she looked into her father’s eyes seeing an overwhelming amount of sadness in them. Bra hugged him tighter wondering if she should bring up Goku. She finally decided that it needed to be said.
“Daddy, can I ask you something?”
Vegeta did not respond as he often didn’t. It was a sign for Bra to continue with her question, “Did you love mom?”
Vegeta turned and looked at her, “What makes you think I didn’t?”
“Nothing, I was just wondering,” she asked quietly.
It took Vegeta a while to bite back his pride before he responded, “Yes. Yes, I did. Very much.”
There was a pause as Bra turned and looked at her father. She watched as he stared down into the picture of his past, of his happiness, of his family. She looked at his eyes and she could tell he was remembering it. Bra looked down at the photograph and then let out a quiet sigh.
“Daddy, are you in love with Goku?”
