Fighting Allergies
Allergies are often difficult things to diagnose and treat.
This is often because they come and go and can be triggered
by many things. For example things found in the environment:
dust and pollen, or by medicines, household chemicals and
various foods. These things that are known to cause
allergies are called 'allergens'.
Everyone, however, does not have allergies. It all depends
on ones immune system and how one reacts to substances
which others may find perfectly normal. A person's immune
system might find a substance bad and in reaction cause
antibodies to be formed. This affects the cells and
histamine is produced. It is ironic that it is the
histamine and not the allergen, which causes all the
discomfort associated with allergies. The symptoms
associated with allergies are itchiness or soreness on the
skin, nose, throat and eyes and also in the lungs and
intestines. This process is repeated every time one comes
across an allergen.
What is strange about allergies is that you can be allergic
to some things at various points in your life and then
afterwards it will not affect you. Or your allergies can
come and go, for example you could suffer from hay fever for
a few years and then have a 5 year break only for it to come
back again with a vengeance.
Another question often asked is 'are allergies hereditary?"
The answer is both 'yes and no'. The disposition to be
allergic is passed on from one generation to another. The
kind of allergy you might have varies. It is not necessary
for both mother and daughter to be allergic to the same
thing. Most allergies, however, just disappear with age.
Many medicines are available to fight allergies. The doctor
only can prescribe medicines for some though most of them
could be bought over the counter from a drugstore.
Some measures could be taken to avoid allergies. The most
obvious one is to avoid the allergen. Children would not
find it very amusing if they have to part with their pet
only because someone in their family is allergic to it. The
idea of bolting of all windows to avoid pollen is also not
very practical. We do have to go out to earn and summer
heat does require that windows be kept open for fresh air.
Some might find an allergy a boon. A person who is allergic
to dust is often advised to avoid cleaning or dusting!! It
is, however, more practical to remove rugs and carpets and
have a hard floor.
