[binge/purge]


this is the most dangerous practice of all.  be extremely careful.

i was inexplicably proud of myself after i first vomited intentionally.  it was cocoa pebbles, a huge vice of mine that i only come into contact with at my dad's, because i refuse to allow my mom to purchase them for that very reason.  if you don't already purge, i wouldn't recommend starting and you should know that you shouldn't have to learn how to do it and i'm not here to teach you.  but if you do, or if you are set on starting, here are some ideas.


•a good binge/purge begins with the meal.  as always, you should consume a glass or two of water before beginning and then take sips in between bites.  with purging, it's not to better digestion - it's to help it back up.  remember that foods generally come up in the opposite order that they were eaten and you sometimes can't get everything up, and so be sure to fill up on safe foods first.  be sure to chew thoroughly.

•some foods you shouldn't binge/purge include: chips, meats, pretzels, ice, shredded lettuce, spaghetti, nuts and red liquids.  use your judgment; it's obvious you shouldn't try to throw up sharp objects or objects that you could choke on.  red liquids should be avoided because they can sometimes mask blook, which is an obvious sign that you should stop and consult a doctor immediately.

•when beginning, start in the shower.  it's warm, relatively private, and you get to see yourself naked and dispose of the vomit all at once.  make sure, though, that if you're a cougher, that you have music on or no one's home.

•i bend over, push in and up on my stomach in between where my ribs meet, and cough.  this works for me, but everyone has their own ritual.  in between, i rinse my mouth and take small sips of warm water.  warm water makes me even more nausious.

•i haven't made it past this.  i can't throw up anywhere but in the shower when home alone.  you could also try public restrooms for dining out, but be sure to find a single restroom that locks.  also, i hear the sink and toilet work, but i just can't bring myself to do it.  good luck with those, and be sure to tie back your hair if it's long and clean up after yourself.  flush several times.  clean out the shower or toilet.  if you're away from home, get some lunch bags and use those.  dispose of them in a public garbage recepticle.

•we all know that induced vomiting is very dangerous.  you stomach acid is some powerful stuff (think, it dissolves those nuts and stringy meats) and it erodes at your esophogas, throat, and teeth.  there isn't much you can do about your throat and other internal organs besides stop your behavior.  your tooth enamel, though, might be saved.  try rinsing your mouth with baking soda to neutralize the acid.  then rinse your mouth several times with water.  wait about an hour before gently brushing your teeth, but you must be very gentle so as not to rub the acid further into your teeth.

•if you do this enough, you can scar your knuckles.  try using a toothbrush instead of your fingers, but make sure you don't use it to brush your teeth.

•when you do eat something good or safe, like a salad or fruit, try your best to keep it down.  you need some food in your stomach sometimes to keep your acids balanced to avoid stomach ulcers.  i just had some strawberries for lunch and i'm struggling with this one right now.

•as far as laxatives go, they should be used for emergencies only, like when you binged but cannot purge for some reason.  use stimulant-free overnight type laxatives, but only occasionally.  generally, a fiber supplement daily will work, and does not make your body dependent or harm the ph balance.  these are safe, but try not to use them on an empty stomach.  i get serious stomach aches from this.  they are also helpful after you've binged and purged to get what you missed out quickly.

•binging and purging will only work if combined with at least mild restriction.  be sure to choose a form of exercise you love and can commit to.
