Chapter Sixteen.

“Nick?” Sandra called out as she came through her front door, Amanda in tow. “Nicky, where are you?”

“Up here,” his voice drifted down from upstairs. “I’ll be down in a second!”

Amanda shot her friend a glance. “What’re you doing?”

“You’ll see,” Sandra smiled. “You and me, we need alone time. Can’t have that with Super Spy around the house.”

“Super Spy, huh?” Nick repeated as he came down the stairs. “I’m gonna remember that one later.”

“You do that,” Sandra smiled, ignoring the warning look Nick gave her. “Honey..”

“Uh oh. I know that look,” he grinned. “What do you need?”

“I need you to go away,” Sandra said simply.

“You’re kicking me out?” he asked. “Of my own house?”

“That’s right,” she replied innocently.

“I dunno...” he trailed off, glancing conspiringly at Amanda. “You think I should go?”

“And miss another greusome pillow fight?” Amanda grinned. “No way. I say you stay.”

“I’ll see you guys later,” Nick said quickly, kissing Sandra softly before he headed toward the door. “I think AJ needs some pestering. I’ve been slacking lately.”

When the door closed behind him, Sandra turned to her friend. “Mission accomplished. Now.. on to the important stuff. No rush though..”

“Right,” Amanda sighed. “No rush.”

They got settled in the living room, drinks in hand, and Sandra sat patiently, waiting for her friend to be ready. If anything, she had all the time in the world for Amanda, and she’d wait as long as necessary.

“This isn’t an easy thing to talk about,” Amanda said after a while, laughing nervously.

“I would imagine so,” Sandra smiled. “But you can do it.”

“Right. I did it once already, didn’t I?”

Sandra nodded, sitting back in the couch. She wasn’t going to push her. Not in the least.

Amanda stared across from her at her friend and sighed. She was pushing her more than she thought with her silence. She said ‘no rush,’ but she didn’t realize that her patience was making Amanda nervous. So nervous, in fact, that she felt she was just going to blurt everything out, not pace herself, and that could lead to disaster.

“San..” she began nervously, knowing it was now or never.

“Sup dude?” she replied calmly, while inside, Sandra’s heart was racing nervously. She was worried about her friend, obviously, but she had a feeling things wouldn’t be okay for a long time after this conversation ended. Their friendship wouldn’t suffer; it never would, but Amanda looked ready to break into a million pieces.

“San... before I came here...” she trailed off nervously, her palms suddenly sweaty. How was she going to do this?

“I got married.”
