POISONS AND POISONING.
GIVE ME ABOUT A WEEK but do keep checking - I'm probably adding more as you are reading this :
acetaminophen : widely available painkiller which is only poisonous in large doses.
Symptoms : nausea, vomitting, abdominal pain, lethargy and jaundice. Liver failure may also occur.
Antidote : N-acetylcysteine.
aconitine : chief active ingredient in dried powdered root of monkshood and used in some liniments.
Symptoms :warm tingling sensation followed by numbness when absorbed orally. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, restlessness, vertigo, slow breathing, low body temperature and convulsions. Heart problems similar to digitalis overdose also possible.
acrylamide : a neurotoxin used to make polyacrylamide.
Symptoms : peeling skin, reddened skin on hands and feet, numbness in feet and legs, sweaty palms and feet .
Antidote : slurry of activated charcoal followed by gastric lavage with saline cathartics. Daily doses of vitamins B1 and B12. Pilocarpine, and aspirin or phenylbutazone may ease motor activity and muscle problems.
