National Anthems

God Save The King.

God save our gracious King, Long live our noble King, God save the King: Send him victorious, Happy and glorious, Long to reign over us: God save the King. O Lord, our God, arise, Scatter his enemies, And make them fall. Confound their politics, Frustrate their knavish tricks, On Thee our hopes we fix, God save us all. Thy choicest gifts in store, On him be pleased to pour; Long may he reign: May he defend our laws, And ever give us cause, With heart and voice to sing, God save the King.*

* When the monarch of the time is female, beyond the other alterations mentioned above, the last line of the third verse is changed to "with heart and voice to sing/ God Save the King".

Around 1745, the anti-Jacobite sentiment was captured in a fourth verse, with a prayer for the success of George Wade's army then assembling at Newcastle. These words attained some short-term popularity, although they did not appear in the published version in Gentleman's Magazine:

                    Lord, grant that Marshal Wade,
                    May by thy mighty aid,
                    Victory bring.
                    May he sedition hush,
                    and like a torrent rush,
                    Rebellious Scots to crush,
                    God save the King.
