Sex, Lies And The Internet:

Deception and Betrayal In Cyber Space

After hearing about the internet from her friends and seeing numerous ads for computers and internet services, Sally decided it was time for her to discover the World Wide Web. For weeks she saved her money so she could buy a new computer. Finally that day came. She went to the most popular computer store in town. Once inside, she searched for a salesman to help her with her choice of computer. As the salesman began to describe a computer, a look of confusion set in on her face. "Mega what?" she said. "Giga huh?" She then told the salesman that she was interested in anything that would satisfy her desire to check out the internet. After looking at various models she picked one out. She had it installed that day and by nightfall she was already surfing the web. Then came that time that almost all internet users encounter... chatroom time. Sally didnt know what she was getting into...

Go to almost any major network site and you will find that they all have one thing in common, they all have chat. Yahoo, NBCi, Bolt..... the list goes on and on. Chat rooms are even available for personal web pages. There are many chat communities and types of chat. All chat room members have a user name. Almost all chat sites have a romance room or some type of sex related room. People go to these rooms to play out fantasies or to just meet someone new. However many of these people are there for only sex. Today's world is so driven by sex or the desire to be unfaithful to their lover. A gang rape was once a feared thing but today it is a common fantasy among many women. In these chatrooms you see numerous amounts of people asking for "cyber" sex. The problem is that you never know who is on the other end of the chat.

A young married couple decide to go online. The couple are very much into the swingers scene. They each like to see the other have sex with somone else. So they target a username in chat. The husband watches as his wife has cyber sex with another male she met in the chatroom. Then it becomes his turn to have cyber sex with a female he met in chat. No one knows that the two user names are related.

There is alot of deception among the internet users and unfortunately there are many innocent victims to these people's devious games. A young man who is bi-curious goes into chat. He decides to use the internet as a way of testing his sexuality. He makes a new user name which is a female name. He enters chat and introduces himself as a female. The male users in the room begin to ask questions about what they think is an attractive female. Then he is asked if he has a picture to show. He begins to plot and think of a way to be female. He has a picture of his sister saved on his computer so he sends it through email and claims to be the person in the picture. Not a very nice thing to do to people but very common. He spends time satisfying his homosexual desires while the other participant isnt even aware that he is a male. Another common activity among many internet users is multiple chat sites. There is a saying that goes along with the internet which is "you can be anyone or anything you choose to be on the internet". A young female is in chat one evening and as the night goes on she starts getting the desire to have cyber sex. She has never had cybersex in this particular chat site so she tells all her friends that she is going to bed. After several goodbyes, she logs out of chat. Instead of going to bed like she tells her friends she is going to, she logs into another chat site, naughtychat.com where she becomes another person. She is well known in this other chat as well. She doesnt use the same user name at any of the sites she goes to so no one can figure out whom she is. She has a different story for each chat. In some ways this is like a split personality.

Sit in any chatroom and chances are someone will put up a link to their picture. A user can click on that link to see the picture. Once the picture is downloaded, they can right click and save the picture onto their own hard drive. When the time comes to enter into a different chat, the person can use this picture and claim its actually themselves. Pictures are available all over the internet. A simple right click and its saved to your own computer. These pictures can be anything from a nude photo obtained from a porn site or a modeling picture from a magazine site. Wherever the picture comes from, there is a chance it could be used by someone with dishonest intentions. I myself have even had someone send me a picture of herself, but when i got the picture it was actually a picture of Mandy Moore. Most people who do these dishonest things have enough intelligence to not use a picture of a celebrity. Either way it is a very low and devious thing to do. No one deserves to be decieved in that way.

A gay male sits in a chat site. He see's a user making fun of homosexual's, so he decides to get some type of revenge. His user name is that which could be either male or female. So he begins to send this person private messages. He tells that he is female and tells where he is from. They talk more and more and get to know each other. The gay male sends pictures of his female room mate as pictures of himself or "herself". This charade goes on and on. The gay male is satisfying his homosexual needs while also getting revenge on the homo bashing male. The intent is to make the other person look like an idiot. When the time is right the gay male exposes the fact that he is indeed a male.

Who knows all of the reasons for these cruel games that some people choose to play. Many types of lies are told, many games played, many people hurt. Some choose to lie about their age while others may lie about their location, sexual preferrence, sex, race or other topics. Some are using the internet to be unfaithful to their spouse or lover. Some are just satisfying a sexual curiosity while others may be fulfilling a fantasy. Some couples are actually involved in the plot together. If a person is willing to call another user it could be the spouse that the user is actually talking to. A woman could be pretending to be a man and when the time comes that a phone call is agreed to, then the husband or boyfriend takes over. He's involved in the plot so he knows what to say and also knows all about the person calling. The couple sits back and laughs as its happening. Each party getting involved by telling the other what to say. Taking turns behind the keyboard. They think its funny playing games with people's emotions.

There are also many dangers in giving out real information such as phone numbers and addresses. As everyone knows, you never know who you are actually talking to. The person could seem very nice and trusworthy when in fact it could be an escaped convict or wanted felon. Several times a story has been published in the newspapers across the world about a young girl meeting someone from the internet offline and being murdered. So one has to be careful while at the same time not be deceiving. If you dont want to let the other user know any info, then simply let that person know that you choose to not give out any personal information. Dont just make things up because you think it is fun.

Although most average users have no way of actually finding out if the person is really who he or she claims to be, there are a few ways that a user skilled in networking can find out a few details about someone. But those activities are somewhat illegal and not something to try unless you really know what you are doing.

In today's chatrooms you see anything from deception to a user just being a trouble maker. Some users befriend other users by getting involved with their friends boyfriend or girlfriend. You see threats of hacking, threats of a user going to the home of another user and the common name calling and mama jokes. As of yet no one has been able to design a chat intelligence filter. Im not sure why these people choose to go onto the internet to play their games. It could be fear or lack of intestinal fortitude, but none the less, they sure seem to cause alot of pain and heartache. Just like the deceiving and betraying users, there are also some very innocent users online. People who are "real" and dont make themselves out to be something or someone they're not. Some feel no need to give out false information or pretend to be someone other than the person they truly are. Not all users are out to cheat on someone or satisfy some type of sexual desires or fantasies.

So as you travel through cyber space, always be aware that those deceiving people are out there. Its very hard to completely trust and believe someone when you're communicating by computer. Just hope that you are never targeted and never have to feel the pain caused by someone who chose you to be their online toy.
