Believe it or not, people have been manicuring their nails for more the 4,000 years. In southern Babylonia, noblemen use solid gold tools to give themselves manicures and pedicures. The use of fingernail polish can be traced back even further. Originating in China in 3,000 BC, nail color indicated oneís social status- according to Ming Dynasty manuscript; royal fingernails were painted black and red. The Egyptians also colored their nails, using red to show the highest social class. It is said that Cleopatraís nails were painted a deep red, whereas Queen Nefertiti went with flashier ruby shade. In Egypt and Rome, military commanders also painted their nails to match their lips before they went off to battle.

How to Maintain your Manicure:
Always treat your nails as if youíve just had them polished. Instead of using your nails for the daily exercise of scraping, pulling, picking and opening, use the pads of your fingertips not your nail. Along with preventing splitting, chipping and breaking, this will make your hands look more elegant. When cleaning the house and doing the dishes, be sure to wear gloves. This prolongs the exposure to water, which can cause nail damage by drying our your skin and nails. To help prevent nail polish from chipping reapply your top coat regularly and avoid fast-drying polishes that donít last as long as regular polishes.
