News Letter for the 29th October 2001
TO ALL FAMILIES 29th October 2001

WELCOME TO ALL
Shall I say it again - we are still waiting for that elusive fine sunny Monday afternoon. But as shown by the good turnout last Monday on an overcast Labour Day, we will mange to run a programme of events.

CLUB PROGRAMME
Tonight, we will be running the first week of a new three-week programme. This allows for a longer time(30-40 minutes) for practise / training at each field event. The 7-9 year olds will be only doing one track event (60 metres, 100 metres, 200 metres) between 6.10pm and 6.30pm. The 10-14 year olds will still two track and two field events, starting with a long-distance event (i.e. 400/800/1500 metres) and finishing with a sprint. The Tiny Tots programme is unchanged (still 5.30-6-30pm) and tonight they will mainly be doing novelty events.

INFORMATION
For those who are new tonight, we have copies of basic information in the office to give out about the athletic competitions available for the children and the fees by age group. Please take only one copy per family.

ENROLMENT
Many children will have had two nights of free attendance. Next week, we will only time or measure those whose names appear on our age-group printouts. Enrolment forms are available to take home, but remember that proof of children's ages(such as Plunket Book) will be required.

UNIFORMS
In the original information handout, we advised the shorts would cost $18.00 and the shirts $15.00. However, the cost of material has risen since last season. Therefore, the cost of shorts is now $22.00 and the shirts are $18.00. For those who have already ordered, we will honour the old prices, but new orders will be at the new prices. As previously stated, we do not intend to or make any profit from the uniforms.

TRANSTASMAN
The second pre-trial of Sunday 4 November for the Transtasman has been shifted to Margaret Griffen Park, Mt Roskill. Enquiries to Ross Lipscombe, 09 626 5252. If your child is aged 10 or 11 at 1 October and wants to part of a 144-strong team to take on the Aussies in early January, then take the information home to read.

COLGATE GAMES
The entry forms have arrived, and can be collected from the office along with information about the motel that the club has booked at Wanganui. A draft programme of events is attached to the rear of this notice. As the official closure date at Wanganui is 17 November, we have only more two club nights [5/12 November] to accept the entries.

ATHLETIC COURSES
One of our parents attended the Run / Jump / Throw course on Wednesday night. We are now trying to arrange two courses (sprints/relays and long jump) for club parents before the end of the year. Most courses are of three hours, held either at night or on a Sunday morning. Please contact Frank Holcroft, Club Captain, if you are interested. The club will pay most of the costs associated with each course.

RIBBON DAY
The first Ribbon Day is of the season was at Cambridge last Saturday in an oasis of sunshine amidst the inclement weather of the weekend. We had 29 children present, including some attending for the first time. I hope you thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Fairfield parents did the timekeeping and ran a high jump in the morning session. As the referee, I was pleased about the number of children wearing club uniform and wearing the age flash This Saturday, the Ribbon Day is at Kawerau and we have been asked to do timekeeping as usual. Because of the distance, we will not be taking the club tent - therefore, please take your own sun umbrella. The map shows the location of Prideaux Park, a very pleasant ground with trees all around. For those viewing this newsletter on the WEB site, from Rotorua turn right into Islington Street and then right again into Plunket Street. Last year, afterwards many of us went to the town swimming pool (which is free) before heading off home and/or to Rotorua for a takeaway dinner. The Ribbon Day of 8 November will be at Strathmore Park, Tokoroa. A note that Ribbon Days are only cancelled if it is really pouring down.
