News Letter for the 22nd October 2001
TO ALL FAMILIES 22nd October 2001

WELCOME TO ALL
Tonight is the third night of the season but at time of writing we are still waiting for that elusive fine sunny Monday afternoon.

INFORMATION
For those who are new tonight, we have copies of basic information in the office to give out about the athletic competitions available for the children, the fees by age group, and the cost of uniforms. As there are five pages in this handout, please take only one copy per family.

ENROLMENT
Enrolment takes place in the office building next to the grandstand. The enrolment forms are available to take home tonight, but remember that proof of children's ages(such as Plunket Book) will be required. Everyone will has two nights of free attendance. Please note the advice about uniforms in the information handout - also, we do not intend to or make any profit from the uniforms.

AGE FLASH
The 'age flashes' for the 2001/2002 season have now arrived. These are small plastic squares with the child's age group for the season - they are to sewed (left side of chest is best) on the Fairfield Club singlet, and the child's name put on in indelible ink. Do not use safety pins

CLUB PROGRAMME
Tonight, we will be running the Week Three programme of two track events and two field events (for the 7-14 year olds). Because of the lesser numbers of a Labour Day, some groups might be combined differently tonight. Tonight, the Tiny Tots will mainly be doing running events.

SAFETY
A reminder once again to not let the children cross the track during other races on the track.

RIBBON DAY
The first Ribbon Day is of the season is at Cambridge this Saturday [27 October]. There is no need for a map - the grounds are on the left, opposite the water tower, as you enter the town. It will start at 10.00am and finish at about 3.30pm.

This is the only Ribbon Day where the rules about uniform etc (for 7-14 year olds) are not strictly enforced. I have been selected to be the Referee at this meeting - therefore, if uniform or age flash are not worn, I have the right to allow children to compete, and put their age group on their hand in marker pen. I can also disqualify people for baggy shorts or loose designer shirts.

Fairfield Club will be doing the timekeeping, and we have been asked to do timekeeping at Kawerau the following Saturday [3 November]. A map will be provided in next week's newsletter (park next to main road and at turn off to shopping centre). Town swimming pool is free.

A note that Ribbon Days are only cancelled if it is really pouring down. There is allowance for a postponement day of Sunday.

TRANSTASMAN
Last week, we had copies of the Transtasman flier to give out to all the 10 and 11 year olds (age as at 1 October 2001 - the Australian age groupings are slightly different than New Zealand's). The first trial is on 27 October at Papakura. If your child wants to part of a 144-strong team to take on the Aussies in early January, then take the information home to read.

For those who took the information home last week, they have now sent us a letter to say that the second pre-trial of Sunday 4 November has been shifted to Margaret Griffen Park, Mt Roskill. Enquiries to Ross Lipscombe, 09 626 5252.

OLD UNIFORMS AND SHOES/SPIKES
If anyone want to bring old uniforms for selling, swapping, or given away, bring them to the office. Also, I can put information in the newsletter for anyone who wants to be contacted at home.

ATHLETIC COURSES
If five or more parents are interested in doing a course about any aspect of athletics (e.g. sprints, jumps) the development officers at Sport Waikato will organise them for us. Please contact Frank Holcroft, the club captain, or myself. Most courses are of three hours, held either at night or on a Sunday morning.

There is a Run / Jump / Throw course at 7.00-9.00pm on Wednesday night at the Hamilton Girls High School Gymnasium. This course introduces the basic skills of Kiwi Sport Athletics, and is extremely worthwhile - about eight of our parents have attended over the last two years. Take your sandshoes. Ring Brett Addisson 838 2657 / 025 757 517 of Sportsforce Waikato for further information. It is thoroughly recommended, and it is free.

COMMITTEE MEETING
A reminder that the committee meeting is on Wednesday night at Frank Holcroft's place.
