News Letter for the 25th February 2002
TO ALL FAMILIES 25th February 2002

WELCOME
It is now getting to the end of the season - this is the sixteenth club night, only three more to go after tonight until the final night of 18 March. Last October certainly seems a long time ago.

TRAINING
Hamilton Hawks have invited our 12-14 year olds to their coaching sessions on a regular basis. This Wednesday night they will concentrate on the triple jump and the javelin, and there is the regular training at 10.00am on Sunday mornings.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS
The club championships are held on club nights over a four-week period (and subject to the weather). Certain events each night will be a championship event. Only children who were enrolled prior to Christmas will be eligible for club trophies.

Though there were not any club records last Monday, several children did do personal bests for an event.

Tonight, the championship events are as follows:
Juniors 1 and 2 60 metres
Juniors 3 and 4 60 metres
Seniors 1 400 metres and high jump
Seniors 2 400 metres, shot put, and long jump
Seniors 3 400 metres, long jump, and hurdles

Last Monday, the Seniors 3 did not have enough time for the shot put and this is re-scheduled for next week. Tonight, the Tiny Tots will be doing the obstacle night but we have had a request that the five-year boys 60 metres be run tonight. Next week, the rest of the Tiny Tots will do the 60 metres (including the five year boys who miss out tonight), Seniors 1 the 200 metres; Seniors 2 the 200 metres and the discus; and the Seniors 3 the 200 metres, triple jump, and the shot put.

If any child will be missing an event because of a school camp or other circumstance, please tell the Club Captain beforehand and he will arrange another club night to record your time or distance - that way, everyone has the chance to have something recorded for every event.

AREA CHAMPIONSHIPS
On Saturday, we attended the West Area Championships at Cambridge. There was some tough competition, and the children came up against children from other clubs that they hadn't seen before. Still, ribbon days do give our children the benefit of a competitive situation and better prepare them for these championships. The situation of heats and final was invaluable to those who had not been at Colgate or competed at previous area championships. All those who competed and were in the top four of an event will get an area certificate, irrespective of how well they do at the Waikato Championships.

Fairfield parents provided timekeepers, a long-jump crew, and a high-jump crew. It was hard work, and thanks to all the club parents who assisted where necessary. Use was also made of our long jump mats. I have also found out that our area was the only one that was not affected by rain - the area championships at Paeroa, Tokoroa, and Tauranga were all wet at some time.

COLGATE GAMES
If you are likely to be attending the Colgate Games at Auckland next January, please give your names to Craig Walker. Motel rooms will be at a premium because of the America's Cup. We may ask some people for an early deposit now to secure the rooms.

SAUSAGE SIZZLE AND CARWASH
Yesterday, we had another day of barbecuing sausages and washing cars at the Hillcrest Warehouse. The sausages went faster than last time and there was a steady flow of customers for the car wash. Thank you to all those who helped, and especially to newer parents for their help.

FIREWOOD
You all know that summer does not last forever, and those icy blasts from Antarctica are slowly building up their strength before unleashing themselves on the unsuspecting Waikato. But, once again, we have some bluegum firewood for sale to help foil those blasts. For your supplies, contact Frank Holcroft at the club or ring him at 855 0678

RIBBON DAY
This Saturday, 2 March, is the Frankton Ribbon Day at Porritt Stadium. This is the last ribbon day of the season and the last time that there will be events for the 3-6 year olds. Fairfield parents will be doing the timekeeping, helping them to set up, and providing other assistance as required.

WAIKATO CHAMPIONSHIPS
On 9 March is the Waikato Championships, including the 4x100 relays, at Porritt Stadium. The championships start at 9.30am. If you are only doing a relay only, the advice is to be there by 4.00pm. Fairfield parents will be helping to setup, running the shop, and doing the timekeeping. Assistance on the day will be required. This will be the biggest children's event of the year at Porritt Stadium.

CLUB PRIZEGIVING AND AGM
The club prizegiving and annual general meeting will be held on Sunday 24 March 2002 at the Hukanui School Hall commencing at 1.30pm. All children will get something, even if it is just a Colgate certificate. Ladies a plate please. Put this event on your calendar when you get home tonight. Please bring back all the trophies from last season so that they will be engraved in time
