News Letter for the 18th February 2002
TO ALL FAMILIES 18th February 2002

WELCOME
At last, the fine weather of the summer has arrived - perhaps it will last like this until the end of the season.

TRAINING
Hamilton Hawks have invited our 12-14 year olds to their coaching sessions on a regular basis. This Wednesday night they will concentrate on the long jump and the discus, and there is the regular training at 10.00am on Sunday mornings.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS
The club championships are held on club nights over a four-week period (and subject to the weather). Certain events each night will be a championship event. Only children who were enrolled prior to Christmas will be eligible for club trophies.

Four club records were broken last week and they were by:- Tonight, the championship events are as follows:
Tiny Tots 50 metres
Juniors 1 and 2 discus, 200 metres
Juniors 3 and 4 long jump, 200 metres
Seniors 1 800 metres, shot put, long jump
Seniors 2 800 metres, discus
Seniors 3 800 metres, shot put, high jump

Next week, the Tiny Tots will be having a break and not doing a championship event
Juniors 1 and 2 60 metres
Juniors 3 and 4 60 metres
Seniors 1 400 metres and high jump
Seniors 2 400 metres, shot put, and discus
Seniors 3 400 metres, long jump, and hurdles

If any child will be missing an event because of a school camp or other circumstance, please tell the Club Captain beforehand and he will arrange another club night to record your time or distance - that way, everyone has the chance to have something recorded for every event.

AREA CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Waikato Championships [of 9 March] is the culmination of competition for the season. But entry has to be by way of one of the four Area Championships. Our area championships (with five other clubs) are at Cambridge this Saturday commencing at 10.00am. For the 7-12 year olds it is the four best in each event that will pass through to the Waikato Championships.

The 13 and 14 year olds have direct entry to the Waikato Championships but can compete at Cambridge this Saturday if they want to. But they still have to put in an entry form now so they can be included in the programme for the Waikato Championships.

Because there are only five clubs taking part, there will be a shortage of officials. I am the Meeting Manager and Murray Giles is the Referee. Fairfield will also be providing the Chief Timekeeper and one other timekeeper, two Judges, a long jump crew of 3-4 persons, and a high jump crew of 3-4 persons. We may need other club parents to help out if there are shortages elsewhere - therefore be prepared to be called upon for assistance.

A reminder that there are not any entries on the day, and there are not any events for the 3-6 year olds.

Note that the Waikato Championships of 9 March also include the 4x100 relays that were called off in December because of the heavy rain

COLGATE GAMES
If you are likely to be attending the Colgate games at Auckland next January, please give your names to Craig Walker. Motel rooms will be at a premium because of the America's Cup.

SAUSAGE SIZZLE AND CARWASH
Last month, several club families raised more than $400 by selling sausages and washing cars at the Hillcrest Warehouse. Another day is planned for this Sunday from 10.00am onwards - if we have enough helpers, we will be able to work in rosters. Please give your names to Craig Walker.

FIREWOOD
You all know that summer does not last forever, and those icy blasts from Antarctica are slowly building up their strength before unleashing themselves on the unsuspecting Waikato. But, once again, we have some bluegum firewood for sale to help foil those blasts. For your supplies, contact Frank Holcroft at the club or ring him at 855 0678

RIBBON DAY
Last Saturday, we had 19 children at the Bellevue / Greerton Ribbon Day at the Tauranga Domain. This day was fine and pleasant and enjoyable but finished after 4.30pm. Fairfield parents assisted at the timekeeping, triple jump, walking, and some other duties.

On 23 February is the Area Championships. But the Frankton Ribbon Day (the last of the season) will be at Porritt Stadium on 2 March.

CLUB PRIZEGIVING AND AGM
The club prizegiving and annual general meeting will be held on Sunday 24 March 2002 at the Hukanui School Hall commencing at 1.30pm. All children will get something, even if it is just a Colgate certificate. Ladies a plate please.

Please start bringing back all the trophies from last season so that they will be engraved in time.

Cliff Thomas
Club President
