News Letter for the 11th February 2002
TO ALL FAMILIES 11th February 2002

WELCOME
This is the third night of the New Year. Welcome back to all those who were not at the previous two nights.

PORRITT CLASSIC
Last Wednesday, Waitangi Day, was the track and field meeting known as the Porritt Classic. We had about 15 club children taking part in 60-metre sprints and medley relays and it was good to see the club uniform on show for all the spectators.

TRAINING
Hamilton Hawks have invited our 12-14 year olds to their coaching sessions on a regular basis. This Wednesday night they will concentrate on the high jump and the shot put, plus there will be the regular training at 10.00am on Sunday mornings.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS
The club championships are held on club nights over a four-week period (and subject to the weather). Certain events each night will be a championship event. Only children who were enrolled prior to Christmas will be eligible for club trophies.

Tonight, the championship events are as follows:
Tiny Tots 40 metres
Juniors 1 and 2 shot put, 100 metres, and long jump
Juniors 3 and 4 shot put, 100 metres, and discus
Seniors 1 1500 metres, discus, 100 metres
Seniors 2 1500 metres, high jump, 100 metres
Seniors 3 1500 metres, discus, 100 metres

Next week
Tiny Tots 50 metres
Juniors 1 and 2 discus, 200 metres
Juniors 3 and 4 long jump, 200 metres
Seniors 1 800 metres, shot put, long jump
Seniors 2 800 metres, discus
Seniors 3 800 metres, shot put, high jump

If any child will be missing an event because of a school camp or other circumstance, please tell the Club Captain beforehand and he will arrange another club night to record your time or distance - that way, everyone has the chance to have something recorded for every event.

WAIKATO CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Waikato Championships [of 9 March] is the culmination of competition for the season. But entry has to be by way of one of the four Area Championships. Our area championships (with five other clubs) are at Cambridge on 23 February. Children can enter only four events, as shown on the entry form. The 13 and 14 year olds have direct entry but for the 7-12 year olds it is the four best in each event that will pass through to the Waikato Championships.

Only those who have entered can take part. There are not any entries on the day, and there are not any events for the 3-6 year olds.

COLGATE GAMES
If you are likely to be attending the Colgate games at Auckland next January, please give your names to Craig Walker. Motel rooms will be at a premium because of the America's Cup.

SAUSAGE SIZZLE AND CARWASH
Last month, several club families raised more than $400 by selling sausages and washing cars at the Hillcrest Warehouse. Another day is planned for Sunday 24 February - if we have enough helpers, we will be able to work in rosters. Please give your names to Craig Walker.

RIBBON DAY
Last Saturday, we had 29 children at the Te Aroha Ribbon Day. This day was fine and pleasant and enjoyable. Fairfield parents assisted at the time keeping.

This Saturday, the Bellevue / Greerton Ribbon Day is at the Tauranga Domain. There isn't any parking in the Domain - therefore, park on Cameron Road. Also, there is not any room for the club tent and we all sit in the large grandstand. If there is time, they will run a triple jump for the 13/14-year-olds at the end of the meeting

On 23 February is the Area Championships.

COMMITTEE MEETING
There will be a meeting at Frank Holcroft's place on Wednesday night.

Cliff Thomas
Club President
