News Letter for the 4th March 2002
TO ALL FAMILIES 4th March 2002

WELCOME
The seventeenth club night has arrived -a regular club programme tonight and next Monday, with a shortened programme (and lollies) for the last club night of 18 March.

TRAINING
Hamilton Hawks have invited our 12-14 year olds to their coaching sessions on a regular basis. This Wednesday night at 5.30pm, they will concentrate on the high jump and the shot put, and then there is also the regular training at 10.00am on Sunday mornings.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS
The club championships are held on club nights over a four-week period (and subject to the weather). Certain events each night will be a championship event. Only children who were enrolled prior to Christmas will be eligible for club trophies.

Over the last two weeks, four more club records have been broken: these were by Matthew Holcroft for the 7 Boys Discus, Clara Fergusson for the 7 Girls 200 metres, and Kylie Adams for the 13 Girls High Jump and the 13 Girls Hurdles. In coming second in the same hurdle race, I understand that Katherine Olson also broke the former record. Tonight, the championship events are as follows:

Tiny Tots 60 metres
Seniors 1 200 metres
Seniors 2 200 metres
Seniors 2 200 metres
Seniors 3 200 metres, triple jump, and the shot put

Next Monday, the Tiny Tots will be doing the 80 metres, and everyone else should have finished their events. We may have a walk next week for those who wish to take part. If any child will be missing an event because of a school camp or other circumstance, please tell the Club Captain beforehand and he will arrange another club night to record your time or distance -that way, everyone has the chance to have something recorded for every event.

COLGATE GAMES
If you are likely to be attending the Colgate Games at Auckland next January, please give your names to Craig Walker. Motel rooms will be at a premium because of the America's Cup. We may ask some people for an early deposit now to secure the rooms.

FIREWOOD
The recent wet weather could be seen as a precursor of the winter weather to come. We have bluegum firewood for sale to help keep you warm and dry -for your supplies, contact Frank Holcroft at the club or ring him at 855 0678

RIBBON DAY
Last Saturday was scheduled for the Frankton Ribbon Day at Porritt Stadium. However, it was still raining at 8.00am, the water was across Lanes 1-3 at both ends of the track, there was water over both shot put areas, the long jumps had been scoured out and were full of water, and the drainage system was ineffectual in many places. We already had calls from Bellevue, Te Puke, Lake City, and Tokoroa clubs about the situation. Therefore, in my role as the referee, I cancelled the ribbon day.

WAIKATO CHAMPIONSHIPS
This Saturday is the Waikato Championships at Porritt Stadium. The championships start at 9.30am. Fairfield parents will be helping to setup (from 7.30am onwards), running the shop, and doing the timekeeping. Assistance on the day will be required. If anyone has a tent that they can lend for the day, please contact me tonight. This will be the biggest children's event of the year at Porritt Stadium. Only those who qualified at the Area Championships at Cambridge will be allowed to compete in individual events. The programme is still to be printed - however, the order of events will be the same as last season (if you have a copy of last season's championship programme), with the 7-years 200 metres being introduced before the 8-years 200 metres.

Beware that the programme is allowed to run up to 30 minutes early. Also, there will not be any cancellation because of rain.

If you wish to withdraw from an event (either now or on the day), please tell the Club Captain so that he can inform the official running that event. If you have to leave a field event to go to a track event, please inform the field official of the situation.

Because the relay day had been rained out in December, the 4xlOO relays will be held at the end of the championships. If you are only doing a relay and not any individual events, the advice is to be here by 4.00pm. Please confirm your participation with the Club Captain, as we have to have the team names to the relay secretary by 11.30am. There will not be any heats and finals for the relays; it will all be done on times.

CLUB PRIZEGIVING AND AGM
The club prizegiving and annual general meeting will be held on Sunday 24 March 2002 at the Hukanui School HaJI commencing at 1.30pm. All children who are members will get something, even if it is just a Colgate Certificate. Ladies a plate please. Put this event on your calendar when you get home tonight.

Please bring back all the trophies from last season so that they will be engraved in time. There are still more than 20 trophies outstanding.

Cliff Thomas
Club President
