The Herodians
The Herodians were a non-Jewish family of Idumaean [Edomite] origin. The Idumaeans were a tribe of the Edomites of Jordan who had settled in the southern region of Palestine called the Negev. They were subjugated by the Maccabees and had converted to Judaism. The Jews however were prejudice against them, and, just as they called the Samaritians, also called the Idumaeans "half Jews". The Herodians rose to power in Roman service. The founder of the family’s fortune was Antipater (d76/67BC), an Idumaean sheik, the father of three sons, Antipater, Phallion [whose daughter, Berenice [I], was King Herod’s 10th wife], and Joseph [I]. The junior Antipater was appointed Governor of Judea by the Roman dictator Julius Caesar (47BC). He was the father of three sons, Phasel, Joseph [II], and Herod. Phasel succeeded his father in office as Governor of Judea (43BC). Joseph [II] was appointed "Patriarch" of Jerusalem. And, the other brother, Herod, his brother’s army-commander, with a Roman army, overthrew the Maccabees, and established his family, called the Herodians after him, on the Israeli throne. Herod was confirmed on the throne by Mark Anthony, and was crowned by Augustus Caesar in a ceremony in Rome.

01. HEROD "THE GREAT" is so-called in history for the great public building projects he undertook. He restored Jerusalem to much of its former grandeur. His most ambitious project was the remodeling of the temple to make it the world’s most magnificent building.
After overthrowing the Maccabees, King Herod executed all the male members of the Maccabee Family, and its female members were either forced into marrying into his family or were placed in the temple order of vestal-virgins. The ex-king Hyrcanus II [age 80] was executed in 30BC. His daughter, Queen Alexandra II, was executed in 28BC. Her son Aristobulus, who briefly held the office of High-Priest, had been executed earlier in 36BC. Her son Alexander “Heli” ["The Sun"], or Heli, whose father had been a Davidic prince, was executed in 17/13BC. If he may be identified with the "Heli" of Luke (3:23), then, he was survived by an only child, a daughter, "The Virgin" Mary, who was put into a religious order of temple-virgins. Herod, himself, married the Maccabee heiress, Mariamne, as his 2nd wife; and, the Maccabee princess Antigone was given in marriage to his [Herod’s] eldest son, Antipater, begotten of his 1st wife.

King Herod died, age 70, in the month of March on the night of an eclipse of the moon just before the Passover Feast in 4BC. He was said to have reigned 36 years, but is that dated from when he became governor in 40BC or when he began king in 37BC? For, some modern scholars are rethinking the traditional date of his death in 4BC, because in 1BC there was also an eclipse of the moon in March just before the Passover Feast. Herod, in his will, divided his kingdom among three of his sons. Herod's son Archelaus inherited half the kingdom, which part was called "Judea"; and his other sons Herod Antipas and Herod Philip split the other half of the kingdom between themselves, one part was called "Samaria" and the other part was called "Galilee". Octavius, the Roman Emperor, refused Archelaus the title “king”, and instead confirmed him as his father’s successor but with the title “ethnarch”. His brothers Antipas and Philip ruled their respective territories each with the title “tetrarch”.
4BC-AD6 2A. ARCHELAUS
new revolts erupted and the Roman forces under the command of the Roman legate of Syria, Publius Quinctilius Varus, had to come to suppress them, because the forces of Archelaus were unable to suppress them totally. Into this political unrest the Apostle Matthew frames the story of the return of Joseph and Mary with the babe, Jesus, in which Joseph was afraid to return to Judea ruled by Herod Archelaus (Matthew 2:22) and therefore settled in Galilee. Herod Archelaus was a cruel, bloody tyrant, whose policies caused riots and uprisings among his subjects. The rulership of Archelaus was so inept that the Jews appealed to Caesar. In consequence of the complaints made against him, he was removed by the Roman Emperor Augustus in AD6, and was banished to France where he later died in exile (AD16). He =1 Mariamme [III]; =2 Glaphyra, his brother's widow; and, by 1st wife, begot a daughter, Herodias [I], wife of Philip-Thomas. Judea, was placed under the direct authority of a Roman governor and was officially annexed to the empire, AD6. It finally took another bloody revolt this time by
Judas the Galilean over the Roman taxation which is behind the story of the Second Birth ceremony of Jesus in AD 6. Archelaus was finally deposed in AD 6 and fled to Vienne in Gaul in central France and died about Year AD 18.4BC-AD39 2B. HEROD-ANTIPAS, the brother of the above, whom Jesus called "that fox", had John "The Baptist" imprisoned and beheaded for speaking out against his marriage to his brother’s [Philip’s] wife, Herodias. He =1 [name], dau of Aretus IV, King of Nabataea; =2 Herodias [II], the wife of his half-brother, and, by him, was the mother of Salome. He had no issue. It was before him that Jesus stood in silence during His passion. He saw the reigns of three Roman emperors, Octavius, Tiberius, and Caligula. Antipas was deposed by Caligula in AD39 and banished to France. And, he later died in Spain in exile.
4BC-AD34 2C. HEROD-PHILIP [I], the other brother, one of the best of the Herodian kings, is described as a person who was moderate in the conduct of both his life and his rule. He was popular among his subjects. His wife, Herodias [II], left him and lived in open adultery with his half-brother. He died in AD34, and was survived by a daughter, Salome, wife of [her uncle], Philip [II], her father's half-brother.
34-48/53 03. HEROD AGRIPPA, son of Prince Aristobulus, son of King Herod by his 2nd wife, Mariamme [I], the Maccabee princess. Under him the three Hebrew provinces of Judea, Samaria, and Galilee, were reunited into a single Jewish state. Indeed, the kingdom and the title “king”, denied to Herod’s sons, were restored to Herod’s grandson. The Roman Emperor enlarged his realm to include the whole of Palestine in AD41. This was the Herod who had St. James, the brother of St. John “The Evangelist”, executed in AD44. Herod Agrippa also imprisoned "Saint" Peter whose deliverance by an angel is recorded in Acts (12). In reaction, an uprising of Christians in Jerusalem led by Theudas, a bishop in the Jerusalem Church, held the city in its grip for about two weeks, before order was restored by Herod Agrippa. He came down with a terrible disease while in the theater at Caesara to celebrate the games, and died in agony five days later. Herod Agrippa was survived by his wife, Cypros [III], and their two sons and three daughters, who were:
(a) Herod-Agrippa II
(b) Drusus (d66), was the father of Salome [IX]
(c) Berenice [III]; =1 M.J. Alex., Governor of Egypt (d44); =2 Herod-Pollio, uncle; =3 Polemo, King of Cilicia; &, mistress of Roman Emperor Titus
(d) Mariamme [VII]; =1 Archelaus III, King of Cappadocia; =2 Demetrius “Alabarche“, Governor of Egypt; and, was the mother, by 1st husband, of Berenice [IV] (daughter), and, was the mother, by 2nd husband, of Agripanus [or Agrippa III] (son); & (e) Drusilla; =1 Azizus, King of Arabia; =2 M. Ant. Felix, Gov. of Judea (52-60); and, was the mother, by her 2nd husband, of a son, Antonius Agrippa [V], and a daughter, name unsure [all kld AD 79].
48/53-66 04. HEROD AGRIPPA II, son, was a teen in Rome at the time of his father’s death. The Roman Emperor Claudius thought about installing the young prince immediately upon his late father’s throne, but changed his mind because of his youth, and placed the kingdom directly under the rule of a Roman governor. Meanwhile, the brother of the late king, Herod [II] Pollio, reigned over another Roman province. Upon his death in AD48 Herod Agrippa [II] was appointed viceroy of his late uncle’s realm. Then in AD53 he was given his inheritance and made king of a third part of his father’s old kingdom. He, though, king, was accountable to the successive Roman governors of the region. In the “New Testament” the elder Herod Agrippa [I] is repeatedly called “Herod” (Acts 12:1,6,11,19-21), whereas the younger Herod Agrippa [II] is called “Agrippa” (Acts 25:13,22-24, 26; etc). He, unlike his father, was never popular with his subjects. The apostle “Saint” Paul stood before him. He sent St. Paul to Rome to appear before the Roman Emperor Nero. Herod Agrippa II was deposed in Year AD 66 in a rebellion of one of his generals, Eleazar "The Zealot", whose troops slaughtered the Roman garrison of Jerusalem, and drove Herod Agrippa II out of Jerusalem, igniting the Roman War of AD 66-73. Herod Agrippa II was deposed by Eleazar "The Zealot" and traveled to Rome for help. Meantime, Eleazar "The Zealot" was busy fighting rivaling claimants, including John "of Giscala" and Simon "Bar Gjora".
These usurpers who replaced the Herodians in AD 66 were themselves swept away along with the whole Jewish nation by the Roman Conquest of the country in AD70. The Romans had occupied Judaea since 63BC, and Judaea officially became a Roman province in AD6, however, not until the great Jewish rebellion of AD 66-73 was the country totally subjugated under the Roman yoke. The misrule of the Roman governors provoked the outbreak of rebellion in AD66 that soon developed into a full-scale war to achieve the country’s independence. Too, civil war broke-out among various claimants to the Jewish throne. The countryside was subdued by the Romans by AD68. Then Jerusalem endured a 2-years’ siege, AD69-70. The city was destroyed, most of its citizens were killed during the fighting, and the survivors deported in a mass deportation and resettled by the Romans in Provence, France. In AD73 the last Jewish stronghold at Masada was taken, and the war was over.
The Herodians, following the destruction of their kingdom, retired to Rome, where they lived and eventually all died out with no descendants. Bernice, sister of Herod-Agrippa II, the ex-king, was onetime mistress of the Roman Emperor Titus, the very one who had destroyed the Jewish kingdom. She was hated by the citizens of Rome and public opinion pressured her to leave. Herod Agrippa II, the last Herodian king, lived 30 years in exile in Rome and died in AD96 an old man, unmarried, without issue.
