The Truth Is Out There

Author’s Note-

This is a crossover between Buffy and the X-Files but for all my Buffy fan friends who don’t watch the X-Files, don’t worry guys, all you need to know is... Mulder and Scully are two FBI agents who investigate paranormal cases, Mulder is obsessed with finding aliens after his sister was abducted and disappeared when they were kids, Scully is more sceptical but has been forced to believe after all the weird things she’s seen over the years. If you’re a huge X-Files fan then sorry but I’m totally ignoring the Mulder being abducted, Scully being pregnant recent storylines! For Buffy it is set after Gone.

“So what is it this time?” Dana Scully asked curiously as her partner dumped a huge pile of newspapers on his desk. She glanced down to see what paper it was, some local paper from a town named Sunnydale. She raised an eyebrow, “Looks exciting...”

“It is!” Fox Mulder said eagerly, ignoring the hint of sarcasm in her voice.

Scully picked the top few papers and read the headline aloud, “Man Frozen, Diamond Stolen.” She looked up at Mulder and said surprised , “You want us to investigate a diamond theft? It’s hardly an X-File.”

He shook his head, “No I want us to investigate how a museum security guard was frozen alive.” He picked up another newspaper, the headline ran ‘Sunnydale Sings’, “I want to investigate how an entire town suddenly started to spontaneously burst into song and dance routines!” He looked at Scully with that familiar look of excitement in his eyes that he had whenever he discovered something interesting and bizarre, “I’ve read every newspaper from the past seven years and this town has seen everything! High Schools been blown up, bodies disappearing from the morgue, unknown animals going on the rampage through the town, an outbreak of laryngitis that affected everyone in town...”

Scully interrupted him, “And what’s your explanation?” She knew Mulder always had some crazy theory.

This time he shock his head, “I’m stumped. I contacted the town’s head of police and he managed to fob me off with some feeble explanation for every single strange happening but it just doesn’t sound right.”

“So we go investigate?” Scully asked unenthusiastically. He nodded still looking way too excited. She sighed, “I suppose at least in a town called Sunnydale the weather must be nice.”

It was one of those rare rainy days Sunnydale experienced and Buffy Summers and her friends were cooped up in the magic shop, not having any more exciting way to spend their Saturday afternoon. On the table various books on magic and demonology were spread out. An empty pizza box lay on top of them.

“Mmmm, yummy, but still not filling enough.” Xander moaned as he polished off the last slice.

“You ate over half!” Dawn reminded him.

Xander shook his head, “The woes of being the only man in the Scooby Gang, no one around to appreciate the true wonders of eating endless pizza.”

“There’s Spike, he’s kinda...” Dawn began before her big sister cut her off.

“Spike isn’t a Scooby, and he’s not a man.” Buffy’s voice was firm and harsh.

Dawn shrugged, she could never understand Buffy, one day her sister wanted Spike’s help the next day she’d act like she hated him!

“He does have some manlike features.” Anya pointed out in her usual logical way. “The right body parts, the general outward appearance.”

Buffy went a little pink as she said, “We don’t want to hear about Spike’s male body parts!” She quickly changed the subject, looking at her best friend Willow, “So, Will, do you know much about Andrew Wells? He said he was Tucker’s brother.”

“I know, I know!” Dawn said eagerly. She smiled brightly, glad to be able to feel useful for a change, “My friend Janine was telling me about how she went to watch her big brother in the school play a couple of years ago and it got attacked by flying monkeys!”

Buffy nodded, “That’s what he mentioned.” She looked down at the notepad where she’d been jotting done notes, “So we have Andrew who can summon demons, Warren whose robot boy and Jonathon who can perform some pretty big spells. My arch nemeses!” She couldn’t help sounding a little doubtful, sure the three guys could cause some trouble but surely it wasn’t anything she couldn’t stop?

Willow looked at her sadly, “Don’t you feel a little hurt that Jonathon could be on their side, against us? I mean we were kinda his friends.”

“But the guy is kind of a psycho.” Xander pointed out. “I mean normal people don’t turn the world into bizarro land where they’re the centre of everything.”

“True.” Willow agreed, she still sounded sad, but that was as much to do with her break-up with Tara than anything else, she always sounded sad at the moment.

“So what do we do?” Buffy asked the group, “We can’t kill them, we can’t tell the police, I mean guns that turn you invisible, who’d believe us?”

“We could just talk to them again?” Willow suggested.

Buffy shook her head, “I think they’re too wacked to take anything we say to them in.” She looked up at the clock as she spoke. “I’ve got someone to see.” She told her friends, “Dawn, walk home with Willow, Will are you gonna be in tonight? I might be late.”

“Sure, I’ll be there. Not like I have a girlfriend or social life anymore.”

Buffy didn’t even notice the gloomy tone of her friends voice, she just said “Thanks, bye guys!” And headed out of the shop.

When she was gone Xander looked round at the others, “Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed Buffy’s been acting slightly wacky recently?”

Willow nodded, “I know, I thought she was getting better but now I don’t know.”

“Maybe she has a new boyfriend?” Anya suggested.

Xander shook his head, “Buffy wouldn’t do that, I mean after the whole not telling us when Angel came back I think she knows it’s better to just tell her friends!”

“Definitely.” Willow agreed, “When would she have met someone anyway? And the only guys she hangs out with are you and Spike!”

Xander shrugged, “Must be something else.”

Buffy opened the door to Spike’s crypt quietly for once. Normal she kicked it down or forced it open but today she sneaked in.

Spike wasn’t upstairs so she headed on down. “Spike?” She called softly as she landed in the lower part of the crypt.

“Buffy?” He answered, sounding a little surprised.

He was laid down on the bed but he sat up as soon as he saw her. He was wearing black leather pants and a tight black t-shirt that showed off his perfect muscular chest. “Hey.” She said shyly.

He smiled, “Hey you as well. I see you’re not invisible anymore, definitely an improvement.” He got up and headed across to her. She felt like her body was being drawn to his as he reached out to take her into his arms. “Like the hair.” He said softly as she snuggled closer to him.

She looked up to look him in the eye, “You seem a bit happier to see me today.” On her last visit to the crypt he’d practically thrown her out.

“Well, I know you’re not just here because no-one can see you being here, makes me feel a little better about it all.” He told her before gently brushing his lips against hers. She wrapped her arms up around his neck and drew him into an eager kiss but he pulled away, “Easy tiger!”

“What’s wrong, don’t you want me anymore?” She asked, her voice teasing. As she spoke she began to undo the belt of his pants.

“You know that’s not true. I just thought maybe we could... you know, talk?” He said looking down at the floor.

Buffy laughed, “You’d prefer to talk than have sex? That must be a first!” She said tossing his belt aside. She moved her lips to his again and this time he was powerless to stop her.

“God Buffy, you know I always want you...” He murmured between kisses. “I love you.”

She didn’t say anything, just pushed him towards the bed.

Mulder and Scully had been in Sunnydale for three hours and already Scully’d had enough of the town, the motel was even nastier than most, even at six pm she’d been able to hear the couple next door screwing. Now at half eight she and Mulder were in some dingy club called The Bronze listening to a group of feeble high school students try to play decent music, and fail miserably.

“Why are we here?” She asked Mulder.

“Because I never get to take you out back home.” He said with a grin, she shot him a dirty look, “And because this place has seen fights, riots...”

She cut him off, “Not surprising really, I’m tempted to start one just to shut this band up!”

“Scully, Scully, you just have no taste for the finer things in life.” He teased. Then he grew seriously, “And because I bumped into a young man at the motel and he’s meeting us here to talk.”

At that moment Scully spotted a dark haired young man wearing black pants and a dark maroon shirt. She smiled, if she was hunting for a toy boy she’d quite fancy him.

“Hey mate.” He greeted Mulder.

Mulder nodded, “Devon MacLeish, meet my partner Dana Scully, Scully this is Devon.”

“Nice to meet you.” She said shaking his hand.

He grinned at her, “Hullo.”

“So what do you do?” She asked feeling a little awkward.

“Do? Like a job?” He said slowly. “Well, I’m sorta between jobs right now, working on new songs for my band.”

“You in a band?”

He nodded, “Sure, Dingoes Ate My Baby, we used to be pretty successful round here but things have dried up since we lost our guitarist a while back.”

“You lost him?” Maybe this was the supernatural reason behind the whole interview.

“Yeah, he got dumped when his bird decided she dug chicks instead and he left town.”

“Oh.” Scully looked at Mulder, the look on her face saying, what the hell are we wasting time with him for?

Mulder ignored her and turned to Devon, “Now you said earlier there was something unusual about your guitarist?”

“Sure. He was a werewolf.” Devon told them matter of factly.

Scully smirked, “You’re very blasé about that, are you sure?”

“Yup.” Devon said with a nod.

Mulder smiled at Scully with his I told you so look on his face, “And that’s not all, you said there were other strange demons here in town?”

“Sure, vampires, monsters and all that. Once I went to this party that got gate crashed by zombies.” Devon told them.

Scully was still sceptical, “How can you prove any of this is true?”

Devon looked her in the eye and said solemnly, “Well you just have to go out at night to find vampires. But if you want to know more there’s this one girl you should talk to, she always seems to be around when the freaky stuff is going down. She’s a friend of Oz, the guitarist’s ex, not one of those friends, or at least I hope not ‘cos the girl is majorly hot!”

"How can we find her?” Mulder asked eagerly.

“Her name’s Buffy, Buffy Summers.” Devon told them, “She lives at 1630 Revello Drive.”

“Thank you Devon.” Mulder said. he smiled at Scully, “Think we should pay Miss Summers a visit?”

~~~~~
In the crypt Buffy and Spike were snuggled up together in bed. Buffy felt so comfortable, and safe, and even normal at that moment. Freaky as it was to be sneaking off to a vampire’s crypt for a shag she still felt like a normal girl cuddling her boyfriend. ‘Cept Spike wasn’t her boyfriend, and she was never ever really gonna be normal. She sighed.
“What’s wrong love?” He asked.
“Nothing.” She said quickly.
He leaned up so he could look her in the eye, “Buffy, you know you can talk to me.”
“I know.” She said honestly, “I just don’t know what words I want to say yet.” She was a freak of nature, he was a freak of nature, maybe that meant they were perfect for each other... “But it does feel better, knowing that you’re here.”
“I’ll always be here for you.” He whispered. She closed her eyes as the painful memory of Angel telling her that... always... She’d learnt the hard way that always didn’t always mean that. “I wish I could be the kind of boyfriend you want, like Riley.”
She chuckled, “Riley was not the kind of boyfriend I want.”
“Ok then, I wish I could be your soul mate like Angel was.”
“A soul mate who didn’t love me enough to stick around, who wanted me to have a normal life when he should have known I never could.” She slowly leaned forward to give Spike a kiss. “And you’re the only one who sees that.”
