Australian
Volleyball Professionals Association
Update 24 October 2001
Dear Members,
Since our last communication with AVPA members several months ago, there have been significant developments regarding the Australian Beach Volleyball Tour (ABVT)
The major change being that we now have a new promoter for the ABVT. At the end of the 2000-01 season, Grand United, ABVT longest serving major sponsor, was seriously considering ending its support of the ABVT if it continued its association with iSport as the promoter. It was Grand United's last minute support that made a successful tour possible last year.
Initially, International Quarterback purchased the rights for the ABVT from iSport in late June this year. I.Q's Andrew Fraser was managing the tour. More recently Andrew has moved to Sporting Frontiers and taken the ABVT with him.
Sporting Frontiers is one of Australia's largest athlete and sport representation agencies and also runs a five-race tour for Triathlon Australia, the Sydney Marathon and also some cricket Australia wide. Andrew is confident that Sporting Frontier's greater resources and contacts will allow him to find a larger amount of sponsorship for the tour in future years.
Unfortunately, the very belated decision by iSport to relinquish the promoting rights for the ABVT to IQ resulted in a very late approach by I.Q to the television networks for programming times. It is our understanding that IQ missed the opportunity to have the tour fully televised on commercial TV by 1 week. The 18-foot skiffs filled the last available programming slot. Therefore television opportunities this year will extend to the National Championships only which will be televised on commercial free-to-air TV. This reduction in anticipated television coverage has affected the sponsorship opportunities and therefore we will need to endure a slightly leaner ABVT this year.
We have met with Andrew Fraser and he has shown us his budget for the National Tour.
The emphasis of the budget is weighed heavily in favour of event presentation.
The AVPA endorse this decision and believe it is important for beach volleyball to be presented in the most professional way possible to the public, sponsors, media and the athletes. Andrew believes the event presentation will be beyond any we have had in the past with a view to delivering a product to the sporting public that will attract more viewers, media attention and sponsors than we have ever had previously.
Sporting Frontiers have expressed their interest in promoting the ABVT for the next 5 years and will negotiate for this with the AVF at the completion of the 2001-02 Tour.
Best regards
Julien Prosser.
