Prisoners of War

Prisoner of War

During the civil war thousands of soldiers were turned into prisoners of war. This could have resulted from anything from being captured during battle or captured in a hospital.

The places that the men of the 37th Tennessee were kept while prisoners have been glossed over by most historians in favor of focusing on prison camps like Andersonville that held Union prisoners of war. This is unfortunate because the condidtions that made Andersonville infamous existed in all Northern prisoner of war camps despite the abundance of food and clothing that did not exist in the South.

The places that became a distant nightmare for the men of the 37th were

Point Lookout
Camp Douglas
Camp Morton
