LEANING POST

LEANING POST

Sharon Steege

I 'm looking for a leaning post
a place to stop and rest
the road has been long and winding
where it leads is anyone's guess.

The road was full of potholes
the grass on either side had died
I looked around for some one to talk to
not a person seemed to be in sight,

Days ran into the night time
the shadows lurked from side to side
how often I had longed for
a little place to hide.

Just a simple leaning post
a place to catch my breath
a place to let my body mend
free my spirit from spiritual death,

I knew if I stopped now
it would be hard to start again
so I just trudged a little slower
waiting for my second wind.

My eyes I casted upward
to see what lay ahead
but alas there stood a mountain
to climb it I would do my best.

I started up that mountain
sometimes just closing my eyes
yet I kept pushing forward
though the mountain seemed so high,

If I could just reach the top
maybe I wouldn't try anymore
my back was tired and weary
my feet were bruised and sore.

As I reached the top of the mountain
I opened my eyes to see
but all I saw was a rugged cross
made from a rugged tree.

At first I thought is this all
that lay at the top of this hill
but all of a sudden I felt the change
as peace told my heart to be still.

I reached out to grab a hold
of the cross to steady my step
I thought I'll rest a minute here
with what little strength I have left,

As I reached out to get a hold
I saw a stain of red
suddenly I realized I had reached the place
my blessed Savior had bled.

It was good enough for him
although despised by most
I knew I had found the perfect place
I found my leaning post.
