Beguiled Childhood
Kenneth J. Ellison

The little child inside me
Longingly wants to be
Returned to yesteryear
And olden times so dear.

I want to hear mother's voice
Singing hymns of my choice,
Her angelic songs yet fill my ears,
The sweetest songs one could hear.

I want to see father in the fields
As he toils to provide our meals,
How I pine to see his big grin
And feel his gentle touch again.

I want to return to the old home place
And kiss my cherub sisters little face
And chase my brother just once more
Through the red barn's hayloft door.

If only time were a magical thing
I wonder at the joy it could bring,
Flying me to where I used to abide
On an enchanted magic carpet ride.

In my fertile minds childlike world
Sweet memories oft times unfurl,
Taking me back to a happier day,
Where in memory I shall ever stay.

I dearly miss the country lifestyle
And yearn to return if only awhile,
To dwell just one day as a small child
In yesteryear, completely beguiled.
