It all started off when I had a 1990 Toyota Tercel and it was
vandalized severely. I was into the chrome rims and the loud systems. I traded
it in for a 1999 Mitsubishi Mirage. I have been doing my own work on cars ever
since I got my first car. I did not know I would be into street racing until 5
months later.
I
did some research on my car about 4-5 months later and found out that I had a
92 hp engine. I raced Civic's, Crx's and many other cars. Plus another down
drop against me is I had an automatic. So then I did what every dumb f*ck did,
I added a high flow air filter and an import muffler and thought I was the
sh*t. I didn't receive the power that I wanted. My budget was horrible. I lost
dam near every race. This is a pointer to people looking to race. My advice is
this; if you want to be different, then don't buy a Honda! Buy a sport compact
with a 1.8 liter or higher!
I
was looking at the available options to speed up my car.
1.
Nitrous oxide
2.
Turbocharger
3.
Internal engine parts
There
was another guy with the same exact car I had with a nitrous oxide kit so I
wanted to be completely different. So I chose to Turbo my 1.5-liter.
Then
for about the next 5 months between paying a car payment and "FULL"
coverage insurance I bought parts to complete a turbo kit.
Total
Spent= $1000 dollars
I
did a lot of research before I bought parts to turbo my car. And the easiest
way I found to turbo a Mirage is to make an adapter from the stock header to a
"TE04H Mitsubishi Turbo". Easily made with 1/4-inch sheet metal and a
steel 2-inch ID pipe. Do not use muffler pipe you need some thick ass pipe for
this! Ideal is 1/4 inch thick.
Get
it MIG welded like I did! My pipe had to be cut and bent back 10 degrees for
turbo exhaust from the block clearance reasons. My exhaust outlet on my turbo
hit the bottom of my engine block forcing me to get it bent back 10 degree's.
That adapter is 15% of the price of a custom manifold. You can collect the sh*t
to make it from a hardware store.
For
the "oil in" on the turbo the easiest way is to get a brass T for the
oil pressure-sending unit. It also requires oil out" this requires a
custom tap into the oil pan. The Water in and out, for the water I taped it in
behind the thermostat for safety reasons. The water out I pulled off the water
elbow from the block that the
Radiator
hose connects to and taped it.
"Teflon
Tape is good to use for tapping oil and antifreeze/water"
That's
the basic hook up for a turbo other things are required like a custom exhaust 2
1/2 inch is preferred than any other for this setup. Such as "MR.
Gasket" header gasket for the custom exhaust adapter to the turbo. Also
Hoses a TE04H Turbo, clamps, clamps and more clamps. Until you buy an
adjustable fuel regulator leave the "waste gate" OPEN. So far my
research has found fuel controllers don't work with 4g15 motors only most
Honda's and the 4g63/4g63t.
Pictures
of my car
My
car has been threw an accident and it might not look the best but she don't
leak!
Also
she is faster than a lot of cars.
It's
and automatic and I can gas break on start to 2000 rpm's.
And
my secret is a TE04H turbo starts spooling at 2000 rpm's!
