Undying Love
The group ran into the Inn as fast as they could, the smell of death following right behind. Those who fell behind, were left behind, buying time for the others. The ravenous undead were right behind them, an outcry of roaring spewing forth from their decaying throats.
"Get upstairs! Hurry! They're gaining on us!" cried the militiaman in the confusion. The rapidly shrinking group stumbled as best they could on the overturned tabletops and chairs that had been strewn across the floor.
"Go! Quickly! They're here!" Yelled the militiaman as loud as he could as one of the group was devoured by one of the hideous creatures. Only six remained, climbing the flight of stairs as fast as they could. The militiaman's light armor was too much for the worn out staircase and the stairs buckled underneatht he weight.
The militiaman jumped hard and barely made it to the end of the rickety remnants of the stairs. The man and his wife both reached for the militiaman and pulled hard to get him up the last few steps as the other three remnants of the group were swallowed up by the horrors below.
"Get into the room! Theres only one way up and I think I can hold them off. Get moving and lock the door!" The couple sprinted through the doorway and bolted it shut behind them. The clash and clatter of armor scraped by claws and sword slashing through flesh could be heard just outside the door.
Inside the room were a few dusty barrels of ale, draped in cobwebs. The smell of smoke filled the air of the small confined storage room. Through the window they could see the horde of monsters storming the other taverns and shops. Flames were visible licking at the window sill at their end of the room. Outside the door on the other end of the room, the sounds of battle ceased as a moan of pain escaped through the soldiers lips. Everything was silent as the endless seconds ticked away, until a loud crash against the door disturbed the two survivors.
The young woman began to cry as she accepted the inevitability of the event. By now the fire had spread inside the room on the side wall, and the creatures outside grew restless and ravenous as their human victims lay trapped. The creatures came bursting through the shattered wooden door and approached the two slowly. The young man embraced his wife in his arms, and held her tightly. She looked up at him into his wide, tearing eyes for the longest time, until he spoke.
"No matter what happens, I will always love you more than I can ever tell you." Their gaze was broken as the couple's lips met in their last moments of life, just as the barrels of ale had caught fire, and flame erupted throughout the room. The couple took no heed to danger in their last seconds of life, for they knew their souls would meet in heaven, and their love would be forever eternal...
