"We are the Nightbane. We are people with incredible powers, and we look like monsters. Don't let that scare you though. We are just as human as we always were. We don't run around killing kids or anything like that. No one knows why we're here or exactly what we are. But I can tell you this - there's a crap load of us out there right now just going through their first change. No one knows why. And no, I don't know why the sun went out or how." - Slim, describing the Nightbane to Prophet. "I look cool... Am I stuck this way?" - Prophet, after his first change. "This is the apocalypse, isn't it?" - Grimm, on darkday. Nightbane is a game of modern gothic horror. It is published by Palladium Books. In the game, the minions of a God-like entity known only as "The Dark" have invaded earth. They have quietly seized control of the governments of the world, and many of the corporations. They are utterly evil, and use the masses of humanity for their own twisted amusement. Many people believe that the problems all began on "darkday". On darkday, the day sun, moon, and stars all disappeared, for a full 24 hours worldwide. The panic stricken population tore itself and its cities apart. Monsters were seen walking the streets. Six hundred thousand (600,000) people died during this tumultuous time. After darkday, things seemed to go back to normal. However, this is when the main invasion force arrived and began replacing important people with shape changing minions. These minions have been able to subvert almost every powerful organization to help in the eventual enslavement of humanity. In actuality, this is not the first time that earth has been invaded by the minions of The Dark. This has happened once before during the dawn of civilization. The invasion was pushed back at that time by the combined forces of magic, and the intervention of The Gods themselves. However, in the modern age, humanity has forgotten much about magic and has turned its back on the gods, preferring instead the new religion of science and technology. Can The Dark be defeated once more? Humanity is on the decline. People often disappear without a trace. The population is slowly dwindling. Meanwhile the environment is being intentionally destroyed through pollution, deforestation, and entire species being allowed to become extinct. "The Dark" won't be satisfied until this entire world has been ground into oblivion. Meanwhile the masses believe that we're merely going through a "bad spell". The few who suspect that something is awry keep their mouths shut for fear that they might be the next one to simply vanish. In this world of dying hope, a few brave souls struggle to fight against the minions of The Dark. Preeminent amongst these champions are the Nightbane. The nightbane seem to be normal humans until the day of their first "Becoming". At that time, usually in late adolescence, the young nightbane transforms into a terrifying monster. Each nightbane has a unique visage or "morphus" once they have transformed. Some are even beautiful, although they rarely can be mistaken as human. The nightbane can transform at will between their morphus and their human "facade". However, after their first transformation, they can sense others of their kind, and can be sensed by the minion of the dark. The minions hunt down the nightbane with a prejudice, and kill each that they can. It is unknown why the minions hate the Nightbane so much, but the threat is very real. The young nightbane are suddenly thrust into a war that they know nothing about and struggle to know what they truly are. Unfortunately, there are more questions then answers for the neonates. The one undeniable truth is that they have been catapulted into a war for their very survival. Among earth's other champions are the mysterious Guardians, people that have been transformed by an unknown force into strange albinos that have the ability to manipulate light. They seem almost to be the opposite of the nightbane, who can manipulate darkness and shadows. Mutual mistrust keep the nightbane and the Guardians from working together. There are a few humans that know about this shadow war. Some fight alongside with either the nightbane or guardians, although others have made a faustian bargain with the minions of the dark. Others owe allegiance only to their peers in secret societies or resistance groups. Some among these rare humans have abilities that science would say are impossible. Some are psychics, and a few are even sorcerers, people that usually belong to secret societies that have preserved pieces of the arcane lore that dates back to the origins of civilization. However, these various groups rarely work together. Paranoia rules the new dark age that earth has entered, and while these groups distrust each other and often battle amongst themselves, the minions of The Dark continue to gain power. Welcome to the world of Nightbane. |
