Chapter 1: The Council

"Wake up! Wake up my little one" cooed a voice. A little girl stirred, but she didn’t want to wake up. "Wake up I said" the voice called out getting a little irritable. The little girl sat up and rubbed the sleep from her eyes. She was in a small burrow under a large, old oak tree. Near the entrance light beamed in and there was a small pile of fruit. The little girl crawled to the entrance and got the food, she ate a few bites than climbed all the way out. Right in front of the entrance was laying her dragon care taker. The dragon’s light gray eyes beamed in the morning sunlight.

“Ello, Tatsu.” Said the girl, “Why are we up so early?” she yawned. The sunlight streamed through the tree top of the ancient forest, covering the ground with little specks of gold. The trees were tall and a very mixed variety. Their cones, nuts and their colorful falling leaves cover the forest floor. Other than that the ground was bare, no grass grew for the tree tops were so dense. They were in the Wood of Old, where the little girl had grew up her whole life.
"We are going to the high mountains again; danger has been spotted on the outskirts of these old woods. And winter is coming, the mountain will soon be unreachable, and none of out enemies will be able to venture there." The young dragon slowly said. The young girl nodded and they began to walk their way out of the forest. They would have flown, but the danger might have seen them and the tree tops were to thick to fly out of. So they made their way out to the other side, away from the enemy. An hour into the walk the little girl began to fall behind.

“May I ride on your back, Tassi?” the little girl asked “We would be able to go faster” Tatsu laughed on the inside, her little one recently gave her the nickname of “Tassi”, and at her excuse to get a free ride. But she love her little one and would be more that happy for her to ride her. She lowered herself to the ground and used her snout to help the little girl up on her back. They were indeed faster now that she didn’t have to wait on the girl.

By noon they were clear of the wood. Before them laid a near endless valley, stretching out for miles. Towards the end was the base of The Glibly Mountains. The peaks pushed past the clouds and it seemed that they continued to the heavens. Tatsu stretched out her light grey wings, preparing for flight. The little girl wrapped her arms around Tatsu’s neck and held on tight. Tatsu began to flap as hard as she could and took a giant leap. She stayed in the air for a brief second before she began to flap even more, and she gain altitude.

Soon they were flying high above the valley, at the speed they were going they would be at the base by nightfall. The little girl laughed, she and Tatsu smiled. Her little one loved flying as much as she did. Tatsu flew low in the tall grass of the valley and let her little one reach out and grabbed a handful of wild flowers. As the sun set they were near the base. They landed early to get a good night of sleep. Tomorrow Tatsu would have to ascend to the peaks of the mountains. Her little one yawned and curled up next to Tatsu’s belly. Tatsu wrapped her tail around her protectively. She watched her little one fall asleep. She had dark, beautiful silk brown hair, like her mother, and had little elf ears pointing out of them. Her eyes were a shiny sliver, like her father. Tomorrow was her little one’s tenth birthday. Tatsu laid her head down.

"Good night." She said to her little one, to her little Zhi.

The bright sun woke both of them at the same time. They got up and walked over to a near by pond, Zhi wanted to bathe. She stripped down and jumped in. She splashed around and giggled. Finally Tatsu joined in and they had fun splashing each other. Zhi came up to about Tatsu’s knee. It wasn’t that Tatsu was small it was just she was young, one of the last born before Irizimox’s evil rule and took over their lands. Lands Zhi might never see. Tatsu felt sorry for her little one, she won’t ever know of her elfin homelands or her father and king.

The king had become greedier, he still seeked to find the remaining beasts to have them for is own cruel rule. When the creatures took their companions, they went to the other side of their mountains, were they found inhabited valleys and forests. And the great Glibly Mountains, where every winter all the beasts went. It was a very safe place in that time; a place only they could reach, and because of winter the paths the unicorns took froze over with ice and snow. In the middle of the mountain range was a valley protected by the mountains on every side. Many of the unicorns stayed there with their now nearly grown children. But none of them like to stay in one place too long, but this winter was special, every beast and their child had to be there. They would decide to stay in theses valleys and forests or move on past the Glibly Mountains and hope that the king’s men couldn’t pass them. But they all knew he would find a way, but until them they would be safe.

Tatsu and Zhi laid in the grass until dry, by this time the sun was all the way over the valley, it was time for them to move on. Tatsu help Zhi back on her after she got redressed and they took off. Tatsu flew along side the mountains until she was higher than the bases and close to the peaks. When she came across the widest, she knew it was the tallest and began to fly around it, going up as she did so. It was getting really near sunset and Tatsu was only a little above half away. She felt Zhi asleep on her back and didn’t want to risk going straight up for Zhi might fall to her most certain death.

Tatsu kept flying; that was all she could do, there was nowhere to land until the top, and she was getting tired. Two dragons and their children died trying to make the first climb to the mountains. Tatsu didn’t fear for her but Zhi. It was pitch black and Tatsu could see all the stars. The moon was nearly full, when it was everyone was supposed to meet and the tallest peak as they do every winter. Zhi shiver and began to wake up, Tatsu would have to find more clothes for her little one for she kept out growing them every year.

Tatsu let out a sigh of relief when she saw the peak. It was perfectly flat and had tunnels that led into the mountain, and place where they could all stay and keep warm and safe. With Tatsu expert eyesight she could see a few dragons and phoenixes already at the peak, with their children at their side. Tatsu soared above the peak as all looked up at her and they made room for her to land. Tatsu landed gracefully and folded her wings. Zhi jump down and ran towards Selia and her black phoenix, Nyx.

They were the only two closes in age with Zhi now being ten and Selia being near fourteen. Tatsu had Zhi come back to her. "There will be a time to play; now we need food and rest." Zhi nodded and walk with Tatsu as they crawled down the tunnel that lead to a vast opening were a few others were and some unicorns. They went past all the others, both not in the mood to talk to anyone and went down other tunnel where there were many opening in the walls. The openings were caves that went deeper under the mountain.

There was a cave for each creature and their child. The opening in the entrance where they were broke off into four tunnels that lead to the caves. Each tunnel was for a specific kin. They were in the dragons and found the cave they inhabited for years while they were here. Zhi ran her hands along the slick, blue ice walls, her other side was on Tatsu’s side so she wouldn’t get lost in the dark tunnel. When they were in their cave they laid down to sleep. Tatsu sensed that her little one was slightly sad.

"What is wrong, my little one?" Tatsu asked.

“Nothing Tatsu.” Said Zhi. Tatsu knew something was wrong; her little called her by her real name, something she only did when she was serious or upset at her. Tatsu pressed into Zhi’s mind, they were always connected, but they like their privacy. As Tatsu pressed, Zhi let her go freely; she found that Zhi was upset because Tatsu didn’t get her a gift for her birthday. Zhi wasn’t a selfish child, but it was her tenth birthday, it was somewhat special, she was no longer a little girl but near going to young womanhood. Tatsu also found that it wasn’t even a gift but the fact Tatsu didn’t even say happy birthday made Zhi really upset.

Tatsu cooed her little one and wrapped her tail around Zhi. "You know I love you right, I didn’t forget your birthday child, I was there when you were born, and I chose you before you came from your mother’s womb. I have something special for you that I didn’t want to give you until we were alone and rested, would you like it now?" Zhi felt bad for ever doubting Tatsu, she nodded to receive her special gift. Tatsu closed her eyes to concentrate; a soft light appeared in Zhi’s hands. When the light disappeared in Zhi’s hands was a blue sheathed dagger, it was long as one of Tatsu’s fangs and curved like it to. Zhi unsheathed it and the blade looked like glass with a deep blue in the center.

“Thank you.” Whispered Zhi, as she clutched the dagger closely. Tatsu had never given her a gift like that. Zhi curled up next to Tatsu and feel asleep.

"You are most welcome my little one." Said Tatsu as she nuzzled Zhi. "You are becoming a young woman and soon you might have to defend yourself like one."

Zhi woke up before Tatsu; she could see that her dragon care taker was very tried. If she flew like that she would be too. Zhi got up and got out of their cave. She ran down the long tunnel back to the great opening. No one was there. She went down the tunnel that held the phoenixes; she looked in each cave until she found her friend Selia. She was already awake but Nyx was still asleep. His was buried in one of his wings, something he did to keep out any light from his eyes. Selia and Zhi both ran out of the caves and to the top of the peak. They look out over the vastness of the clouds. Zhi was too young to know anything else has her home, but Selia slightly remembered a time where she was not with Nyx, or anywhere near this place. She told Zhi how she remembers her mother handing her to the black phoenix and that they traveled very far.

They discussed the fact that they might be going further into the west away from the lands they had called home.

“Do you wish to go?” Asked Selia.

“I don’t know” replied Zhi, “This is all I know, but I want to see more! I want to see what lies beyond these mountains” she went on excitedly. Selia shook her head. Zhi was always adventures and wanted to everything, she didn’t know how Lady Tatsu kept up with her.

"Zhi!!" Called a voice Zhi heard. Selia was still looking over the peak, only Zhi could hear that voice. "Zhi!! Where are you??!!" Called the voice louder this time that it hurt her head.

"What?" Replied Zhi connecting their thoughts.

"There you are my little one, you frighten me, where are you?"

"At the peak with Selia"

"Stay there I am coming up"

"Tatsu?"

"Yes?"

"Are we leaving the Glibly’s valleys and forests?" Asked Zhi a little wearily.
"
I… I don’t know little one, we might be, we will talk later about the subject. The council is meeting tonight everyone can come, even you children."

"Okay." Said Zhi, cutting off the connection, and just as she said Tatsu emerged for the hole and sat by Zhi. Zhi and Selia kept talking until Selia got up.

“Nyx calls me, I must go” as she left. Zhi sighed, she might be close to Selia, but Tatsu was the only one she ever really care for, one she could only say “I love you” too. Tatsu was Zhi’s only real friend, there was nothing between them, just a few things Tatsu thought Zhi was too young to know, but when she is older she will know them.

Later that night everyone was up at the peak. The beasts were sitting in a circle with all their children to their right. The fifty beasts waited for the last one. Out of the hole crawled a huge black dragon, their leader, the wisest one for he was the oldest and knew and seen many things. His name was Rajni. He sat at the front of the circle with his child to the right of him. His child was a nearly adult young boy at the age of sixteen.

"This meeting was called tonight for the issue of the king. His reign has reached the border of our newly found lands and threatens to take them. Do we stay and risk one more year of getting caught? Or do we leave again over these mountains in hope of finding a home and that his greedy hand can not pass these peaks?" The dragon said beginning the council.

"Yes!! We should leave, not even him could pass these mountains, and if he did it would take him years too." Voiced a phoenix. One of the unicorns snorted.

"You all can just fly over us unicorns and serpents have to walk and slither over! I say we should stay!"

"And have our fate sealed and watch our children be slaughter as we are next?" Said one dragon. Tatsu grimaced in disgust; she did not want Zhi hearing these things about dying. Rajni saw Tatsu’s expression and asked her of her thoughts.

"Well whether or not this council approves of this, I am taking my young one far into the west over these mountains, away from the king’s merciless hand and murder." Tatsu said firmly. Zhi gasped and looked up; she didn’t know they were going whether or not everyone else is.

"Something to say? Young Zhi?"

“Yes. I trust my guardian with my life, she has never let me down and I will follow her.” She said. Others agreed. In a night's time they decided they would go farther and over the mountains, what lied on the other side they did not know, but they were going to go.

Introduction:

In a time before despair, there was a great peace. Where elves and a greater kin ruled the lands with a gentle hand; helping anyone who was in need. Dragons flew the skies and claimed the mountains with their phoenix brethren. Unicorns graced the forests and beautiful valleys of the elves. Great swimming serpents ruled the seas and great lakes and rivers. This was a time of enchantment and wonder and these beasts graced the lands. These were the Lands of Apalala.

Three thousand years into this realm, was when the humans came into being. They came from their homelands, far, far across the seas. A sea serpent warned the elves who lived in Port of Nyssa, by the vast ocean of their coming. The Port of Nyssa was a grand place, for that was where Lord Zaharia, king of the elves had his palace. The elves welcome the wary humans with much enthusiasm. All the great beasts looked after the fragile creatures. Every once in a while a human was blessed when a great creature took to their liking, and the human and beast would spend the rest of the lives traveling, with it the humans gain long lives and was forever bound to the creature that chooses them.

To the elves this was nothing new, for generations their kin would travel and befriend these giants. But the elves and beasts made a mistake taking in the humans. Because with them they brought an evil. A few years later, many other ships followed, they carried the reason the humans lefts their homelands. The evil king, Irizimox had found them, along with the new magical land. His forces quickly over took the lands, and with the elves living so long in peace, they were quickly slaughtered if they resisted. He found all the humans and elves that had with them the beasts; he killed them and took the giants for his own use.

Dragons were shot out of the sky; the king used their shinny scales and claws to make shield and weapons. The phoenixes had their beautiful feathers ripped out to make pillows and other materials. The unicorns were chased down and had their horns cut and hug around the humans necks as a trophy. The sea serpents with fished out and eaten, their head mounted on display. With all the magical creatures disappearing, new ones rose, more evil ones. Giant black birds became the king spies, evil shadows walked in the forests, wielding magic. Dark elves were formed and became the king army. Evil was every where.

The remaining beasts went into hiding taking what elves innocent humans they could. They went past the valleys and to the Apalala Mountains that bored their lands. They traveled far as they could. They lived in peace until the King’s greedy hand for land and power found them. But before Irizimox reached them the beasts made a desperate choice, they would take one being, whether it be human or elf, and go out of the realms, far into the lands of the unknown.

They immediately had every one of the five hundred survivors form into a large circle. As the remaining beasts walked around and chose their companion. They all chose little children, pure and innocent at heart, and they planned to keep them that way. It was a mostly even mix of the humans and elves; they planed on keeping them alive along with their kin. All the beasts had chosen but one, a lone dragon, she was young and had shiny dark gray scales. She was the last daughter of the dragon king, Lord Ryu who was now long dead.

“Lady Tatsu” said one of the elves “You must choose someone now!” Everyone had their eyes on the youngling as she stood up slowly and padded over to the circle. Tatsu gazed at all the faces with her light gray eyes and walked past the group to where Lord Zaharia stood with his human wife. The human girl came up to Tatsu’s shoulders. Tatsu lowered her head to the woman’s large belly.

"Her, I chose her." Every one heard in their heads. Everyone looked confused, but just as Tatsu said that the woman went into labor. A few hours later the baby Halfling was born. "We must go now" they heard Tatsu whisper. The woman and the Elvin king were sad to give up their only daughter, especially since she was a new born. "I will take her as my own offspring, please trust me, I want no one but her." The woman sighed and reluctantly gave the baby to her father who held her for a brief moment. Then they wrapped the baby gently. Tatsu approached cautiously and sat back on her hind legs and took the baby in her arms so the wind wouldn’t hit the baby when she flew. When she felt the baby was safe she took flight and left the rest to their fate, whether it is death or imprisonment in the king’s reign, she knew not. She wished it was under other circumstances, but she did what she did; now she had to keep the infant alive.
