go to GENERAL MORGAN'S RAID THROUGH INDIANA
Anytime, 2007: The John Hunt Morgan Heritage Trail SouthEastern IN
GENERAL MORGAN'S RAID THROUGH SOUTHERN INDIANA
On July 8, 1863, Confederate Brigadier General John Hunt Morgan and two thousand cavalrymen crossed the Ohio River into Indiana. They crossed from Brandenburg, Kentucky, using two captured steamboats. For six days the raiders rode through Southern Indiana. Morgan and his men had conducted earlier raids, but this would be remembered as his Great Raid of 1863. It also was the only major military activity in Indiana during the Civil War. General Morgan's men spent six days crossing through southern Indiana, leaving behind a swath of devastated homesteads and burnt buildings. With their pursuers, led by Union General Hobson, only a few hours behind them, the raiders left Indiana and entered Ohio at Harrison, on July 13th.
Starting just outside of Mauckport near the Kentucky border and running through seven counties of Indiana before crossing into Ohio at Harrison, the John Hunt Morgan Heritage Trail through Indiana follows the path taken by Brigadier General John Hunt Morgan and his Confederate Cavalry during the Great Raid of 1863. Most of the route taken by John Hunt Morgan through Indiana has been mapped out for a driving tour complete with directional markers and road-side points of interest. Morgan's Great Raid covered 1,000 miles and was the longest sustained cavalry raid of the Civil War. While given little significance in the overall history of the Civil War, it was regarded as a major event along the route he traveled. View Route Map

Want to ride your own ride - and still take part in AMA road riding events and win prizes ? AMA Grand Tours are for you. Unlike other organized road riding events, Grand Tours can be completed at your own pace, on your own schedule. Plus, you'll get to visit some places you might otherwise never see. This year, the AMA is offering four Grand Tours, in addition to the ones organized by AMA-chartered clubs. The more tours you enter and the more points you accumulate, the better your chances for winning prizes. Plus, if you enter three of the AMA Grand Tours, we'll give you an entry into the fourth one, free. So sign up for the tour (or a few) that sounds good to you.

Hit the road with AMA Grand Tours: Four to choose from for 2007... (listed below)
AMA members: Solo $15 ; Two-up $18 -- Non-members: Solo $17 ; Two-up $20
All four AMA Grand Tours run from April 1st through November 30th, 2007.

KOAst 2 KOAst Grand Tour Nationwide
KOAst 2 KOAst with the AMA - Camping and motorcycles go together like hot dogs and mustard. There’s nothing like throwing your tent and sleeping bag on the back of your bike and setting off for parts unknown. Camping along the side of the road may sound like a good idea, but having a shower and facilities available while you enjoy the great outdoors really makes the experience more enjoyable. Enter KOA. Kampgrounds of America has more than 400 clean, comfortable, secure and safe campgrounds all across the United States. Motorcyclists are always welcome at KOA, and AMA members doubly so! Simply for stopping by a KOA campground and getting a picture with their bike under the big yellow sign, Grand Tour participants receive one point toward the 25 needed to complete the tour. Entrants who stay overnight will receive a special discount and two points toward the tour!

GPS Pick-A-Point Grand Tour Nationwide
The AMA GPS Pick-A-Point Grand Tour - Participants will collect points for visiting global positioning system coordinates provided by the AMA. Your mission? To boldly go where no Grand Tour has gone before! AMA Road Riding is taking Grand Tours into the space age. Now you can blast off on an adventure into the unknown with the “AMA GPS Pick-a-Point” Grand Tour. Participants will receive a listing of several hundred GPS points submitted by AMA members as points of interest in every state all across the country. Then, using only their wits and their trusty GPS receivers, participants will have to find these points and document them digitally (or photographically). Intrepid travelers will receive points on the following scale: 1 point for points inside your state - 2 points for a spot in an adjoining state - 3 points for destinations farther a field ... Don’t have a GPS receiver? No worry! You will get a chance to win one, and we will tell you some ways to decipher the latitude and longitude that NASA doesn’t want you to know.

“I’ve Been Everywhere” Grand Tour Nationwide
The AMA “I’ve Been Everywhere” Grand Tour - It’s BACK! Possibly the most popular AMA Grand Tour of all time, the “AMA I’ve Been Everywhere” Classic Grand Tour is back after five long years away and it’s better than ever! Participants will visit places named in the classic 1968 Johnny Cash song to earn points. Participants will receive a list of places with their paid entry. All that’s left to do is find places named the same as in the song, take a picture of your bike there, and move on down the road. The point system works like this: 1 point for a place inside your state - 2 points for a city or town in an adjoining state - 3 points for places further away.

Members’ Choice Roads Grand Tour Nationwide
The BikeBandit AMA Members’ Choice Roads Grand Tour - Have you ever wanted a reason to visit some of the Great Riding roads your fellow members have submitted to our web site? We have, too, so the Road Riding guys have come up with the “BikeBandit AMA Members' Choice Roads” Grand Tour. All you have to do is visit these roads and take a picture of your bike under the route sign. Don’t have many favorite roads in your state? Find one with the same number, and you are off and running! What about the BikeBandit part? Well, BikeBandit.com, the online parts source that provides discounts to AMA members, has donated extra prizes specifically for this tour. Participants will receive a listing of all the Great Riding roads with their paid entry. The point system works like this: 1 point for a road inside your state - 2 points for a road in an adjoining state - 3 points for roads further away.

That's the lineup of AMA Grand Tours for 2007. Pick one (or more) and hit the road.
Complete instructions will be mailed to you along with your Grand Tour participant’s pin when you enter.

go to Bike the Temp Ride webpage
Jan 1st, 2007: Bike the Temp Ride Valparaiso, IN
The annual 'Bike the Temp' ride takes place on New Year's Day, departing from Valparaiso and traveling as many miles as it is cold, or as the weather forecast shows, as many miles as it is warm. The annual fun ride starts at 10 a.m. Monday at the Costas Coffee Co. at Calumet Avenue and Vale Park Road. Riders begin gathering early to commiserate and enjoy a free hot chocolate or coffee before the ride, which typically heads to Lake Michigan and back, via Chesterton's Brummitt Road and Beverly Shore's Kemil Road. Event organizer Jay Costas, Mayor Jon Costas' brother, was unable to ride last year because of a wrist injury and again has doctor's orders to not ride this year. "I just had open heart surgery six weeks ago for an aneurysm, so I'll probably drive a sag truck," Costas said. Last year more than 20 cyclists attended the event. Costas hopes there will be more this year. He said warmer temperatures mean cyclists will have farther to travel, but the ride is always fun. "We'll probably go to the lake and back again, like last year," Costas said. The National Weather Service has forecast a 30 percent chance of rain for New Year's Day, with mostly cloudy conditions and a high near 40 degrees. At 10 a.m. New Year's Day, Costas will phone for the temperature and commence the ride for that number of miles. Those interested in riding along should show up by 10 a.m.
