About Shiatsu
Shiatsu is a Chinese / Japanese healing art, through touch. The word Shiatsu literally means finger pressure. Traditional Shiatsu works along the acupuncture meridians, using the pressure applied by palms, thumbs, fingers, elbows, knees or feet. Its theory and technique have root in several disciplines of oriental medicine, including acupuncture and nutrition.
The aim of Shiatsu is to restore health by activating the body’s natural self-healing system. It uses the same channels (meridians) and points as in acupuncture. Instead of needles, the Shiatsu practitioner applies relaxed quality pressure throughout the body to bring energy to depleted areas and to release congested ones, thus stimulating the body’s vital energy (ki or chi) to rebalance and return to a state of health.
When the ki circulating within us through the meridians becomes depleted or blocked, we experience it as pain or as an ailment at a physical or emotional level. The sensitive quality of the Shiatsu touch, combined with the skilful application of pressure on the whole body, allows the receiver to release pain and tension, while addressing the underlying origin of the discomfort.
You can have shiatsu treatments for all sorts of reasons - for pleasure, a general tune-up, relaxation, or for relief from specific problems such as:
lower back pain migraine insomnia menstrual irregularities RSI neck & shoulder tension depression whiplash syndrome low energy digestive ailments lack of appetite diabetes chronic fatigue stress post-natal depression sinusitis hayfever & allergies asthma & breathing difficulties

What happens during a session?
A session lasts for approximately one hour. It takes place fully clothed, on a comfortable futon mattress, at floor level. It is best to wear loose-fitting tops and trousers, preferably cotton, to allow for movement. People who cannot lie on the floor can be worked on in alternative positions, to suit their needs.
An initial talk is followed by 50-60 minutes body work, a short rest and feedback. The whole body is usually worked on and the session is experienced as being both relaxing and enjoyable.
It is recommended to avoid eating a full meal for two hours before the session and to rest for one hour afterwards. The effects of the session may be experienced immediately or several days after the treatment.

How many sessions will I need?
The number and frequency of sessions needed varies from individual to individual, and it will be discussed at the time. Most people begin a series of sessions once a fortnight, then once a month as a check up, and after as and when they need to. In acute conditions, it is advisable to come weekly.
Please ensure you give at least 24 hours notice of cancellation otherwise a cancellation fee may be charged.
