HISTORY OF SAPYM

In 1994, OSC was brought to Gubat, Sorsogon by Ld. Rev. Father George A.     Fajardo who in the early years in OSC was promoted to Green Belt by Master Manny Duran and later to Black Belt by Ld. Bhuds Palesa and Ld. Jose E. Credo.

Seeing the need for strong leaders of the Club, he incorporated the leadership program of JEN into OSC and in order to avoid some misunderstanding the SAPYM was used. And  SAPYM became a program of Saint Anthony Parish Youth Ministry (SAPYM) Gubat, Sorsogon. Later on it was given a new meaning as the  SAP of the Young Macer . SAP is the fluid that gives life to the plants or the blood of the plants. SAP stands for life. Mace is a staff carried as an emblem of authority and power. The scepter of the King is the Royal Mace. Mace-r is the one who holds it for the King. As a program, it was designed to give the Youth and the Enthusiast (Young and Adult) an avenue to develop them totally in physical, psycho-spiritual, and socio-environmental development.

To follow the Ways of the Great One is its guiding star and truly SAPYM-OSC  made a difference in the World of Martial Arts.

As it is, SAPYM is a program that recognizes the importance of physical discipline as basis for moral and spiritual  discipline, hence, SAPYM-OSC was born. The combination of the Filipino Arts of Arnis (Stick Fighting) and karate gave a new identity. SAPYM-OSC became the official representative of the Province of Sorsogon in National Competitions. And r.fr. George Andes Fajardo was the first to earn the National Gold Medal in Arnis Tournament in Quezon City 1996 , for SAPYM-OSC .

JEN is actually a leadership program using the physical arts and philosophy. JEN is a Chinese term meaning “human-heartedness”. Thus the focus of the training is  becoming human. The teaching of the Chinese Philosophers, especially that of Confucius, is given prime importance. The Ten Lessons are mostly from the teaching of Confucius. It was in 1986 that Jen was organized in the Our Lady of Penafrancia Seminary.

Actually, this is what makes SAPYM-OSC differ from other clubs, an orientation of winning friends rather than having enemies. That is the reason for SAPYM-OSC Dream:

“FOR A HAPPY YOUTH, CREATE A HAPPY YOUTH”

HISTORY OF OSC

Karate from the Japanese word KARA means Empty and TE means Hand. KARATE means Empty Hands. It originated from India to China, China to Okinawa (one of the popular place of Japan), Okinawa to all over its country, and Japan to other countries after World War II.

OSC means Okinawa Shorin-ryu Clan. Okinawa for it originated from Okinawa, Japan, Shorin-ryu means Disciplined Way of Life, and Clan means Family or Organization. Supreme Master Chosin Chibana (1885-1969), 10th Dan Red and White Belt, “Titular Head of Okinawa International,” was the Okinawa Supreme Master throughout the World. He started his Martial Arts career when he was 15 years old. When he began to teach, he wanted to be able to differentiate the various style which develop within the Shorin-ryu System. He named his style as Kobayashi-ryu or “small forest style.” He opened his first school on 1917, and was the Karate Instructor for the Shuri-Police Department from 1954-1958. His successor is Master Katsuya Miyahira, who founded the Shidokan Style of Shorin-ryu Karate.

Master Latino Gonzales (8th Dan Red and White Belt), The “Father of Philippine Karate,” the first Filipino who introduced Karate in the Philippines. Master Manny Q. Duran (7th Dan Red and White Belt), “The Last Warrior of OSC,” brought the Okinawan Style to Bicol Region with its center in Naga City. And Master Rev. Father Major Benny Elopre (8th Dan Red and White Belt),” The Thumb,” became the National Executive Coordinator of Philippine Amateur Karate-do Association (PAKA).

Master Reverend Father Major Benny Elopre was the founder of OSC Philippines. OSC Philippines was founded on May 06, 1975 at Holy Rosary Major Seminary, Conception Heights, City of Naga, Region V (Bicol Region), Philippines. He trained under the tutelage of Master Manny Duran, who studied under Master Latino H. Gonzales, the style of karate being used is the Kobayashi Style (Small Forest) of Shorin-Ryu. Now, OSC spreads out all over the Regions of the Philippines.

Ld. Jose E. Credo, a 5th Dan Black Belt brought the OSC to the Province of Sorsogon. And gathering the former students of Master Benny Elopre and organizing the first OSC group in Sorsogon, the OSC tradition continues on and on.

George Andes Fajardo at Ld.
