Bernard Hill's Biography

Bernard Hill was born to working class parents in Manchester, England on December 17, 1944. (December 17th is also the release date for LOTR:ROTK.)

He is married, with a son named Gabriel and a college age daughter from an earlier relationship.

He is a purple belt in karate and an experienced horseback rider.

He was originally considered for the role of Gandalf.

In America, he is best known pre-LOTR for his role as Captain Edward Smith in Titanic. Hill gave the movie one of its finest performances as the noble and doomed captain who went down with his ship. An Entertainment Weekly article (January 9,2004) on Hill said: "The look on Hill's face as he waited for that wall of water to crush him - terror, guilt, and acceptance vying for dominance - haunted audiences around the world." In England he is better known, and respected for his wide range of stage and television roles, particularly his searing, award-winning turn in the 1982 miniseries The Boys From Blackstuff as Yosser Hughes, a down-and-out Liverpudlian.
