The Lord of the Rings Trilogy
The Lord of the Rings isn't like a trilogy so much as one nine and a half hour long movie. The Fellowship of the Ring was so spectacular that it gained the trilogy its popularity. The first film was a basis for setting up the plot and introducing the main characters. The adventure begins. In The Two Towers, everyone has gone their seperate ways to do all different things, all for the fate of the world. The Return of the King ends the trilogy by everyone completing what they set out to do. Frodo destroys the ring (sort of), Aragorn becomes king, and Sauron is destroyed. I do in fact love this trilogy though I do have some discrepancies with the third installment. My only problem is that it is so long, it's almost impossible to watch. Who has time to sit down and watch three hours of a ten hour movie? I also got the feeling that the third and final movie did not really fit with the rest. Suddenly, Aragorn becomes this arrogant leader type of character who is rather pompous if you ask me. Frodo becomes this psychopath determined to keep the ring for himself. Arwen is dying for no reason. The ever so annoying and worthless Galadriel is still going on about how all is lost and destroying the ring is Frodo's responsibility. Gollum is planning to kill them. And Sam and that Eowyn chick become the true heroes of the film. Legolas and Gimli are merely back characters with no real importance. Sauroman isn't even seen in this one (I guess he's just locked in his tower by the tree guys). The most annoying part of this movie is the fact that it ends six or seven times. The movie keeps fading to black and just when you think the movie is finally over and it's safe for you to go pee, it fades back up. I actually found myself screaming "Noooo!" around the third time the movie ended. The movie only needed one ending. Gandalf never really used any of his wizard power except to scare the shadow dragons away. Gollum is actually the one who destroys the ring by accidentally falling into the lava while dancing around. Frodo doesn't do anything except complicate things by being a stubborn asshole and refusing to destroy the ring himself. What is up with that? No one in this movie is the same character that they were in the first with the exception of Galadriel who narrates on and on about how all hope is lost, Frodo will die, the world has changed, or whatever. She does nothing to help in any case. In summary, the Lord of the Rings is going to be famous for all time and win tons of awards, but I just didn't buy into the Return of the King as tying everything together.
