Hellboy

This movie was better than what I was expecting it to be. It was pretty dark and some parts of it were actually scary. Besides a couple of lame scripted lines, the movie was entertaining and fun. The main part of the film that bothered me was that the criminal mastermind of the plot (Rasputin) looked neither villiany, nor sinister. He looked like Cypher from the Matrix. We are talking about an evil sorcerer, hundreds of years old, unable to be killed, walking around with his hip 19th century glasses and black leatherwear. His henchmen was way more threatening and scary than he was. Hell, the fish man was scarier looking then he was and he was a hero for goodness sake. The henchemen literally kicked ass. He was horrifying to look at, unable to be killed because he was dead already and free to go on a killing spree at his own desire. He reminded me of that Voldo character in Soul Caliber. The special effects were pretty. The story worked okay, but it seemed like the ending of the film had no effort put into it. It's like he's turned into a devil and he's going to destroy the world, then his trusty side kick yells, "Remember who you are!" and all of sudden he no longer wants to destroy the world, rips his horns off and stops Rasputin. Not only is this line lame, it is riduculous to think that if Hellboy's mind was really warped enough for him to destroy the world, that four words are going to change everything and snap him out of it. The other thing that bothers me is how the film kills off a main character and then magically brings them back to life. I hate it when films do that. It isn't believable. If you want to kill someone off, leave them dead. Otherwise don't do it. It also bothers me that Hellboy smokes so much. He is constantly smoking a cigar. Not a very good role model for kids. Plus the movie is pretty dark and violent, it should be rated R. Besides that, the movie was good. Worth seeing once. It's use of humor will make you laugh at least once and the costumes, make-up, and special effects give it a great comic book feel.
