The Review

The Review..

Humanity has reached its evolutionary end and now lies upon the brink of extinction.  "Angels"  attack at will striving to reunite with the one called "Adam" .  Any angel completing this goal  will spell the end of humanity as we know it.   The only hope of humanity's survival lies with three special units called Evangelions and the young trio who pilot them.  Why are the angels attacking? What really  happened 15 years ago that put humanity on the brink? Will humanity rebound or pass into history?  Find  the answers in the riviting tale known as

NEON GENESIS EVANGELION!

Produced by Gainax, Neon Genesis Evangelion follows the life of three youths chosen to pilot the evangelions in defence of humanity.  All is not well though as the pilots must overcome  conflicts within them selves just as much as they must pilot the Evas against the angels. In addition, NERV (the agency in charge of the evas) along with SEELE seem to have their own agenda about humanity's progression.  Did the actions of a few bring the vengeance of the angles upon on all humanity? Or is "heaven" as we'll call it and humanity locked in a power struggle over what the future brings?  Many questions arise as one tends to get more involved in the subplots and hidden stories than the angel battles.

Having reveled the plot just as much as I wish to, I must warn the masses.... This isn't your average sit down in front of the TV with the kids anime.  In addition to some compromising scenes and some nudity (not much, but you know how anime can be sometimes) This one is a thought provoker, as the creator goes on a exploration of the human spirit.  In the movies it gets to the point where the storyline is dropped in order to bring his philosophy to the audience.  Which leads me to give the movies a failing grade.

So why give the series such a rave intro?

The series its self is superbly done.  The characters are quite believable and their strive to come to know them selves can be just as riveting as their struggle against the angels. The philosophic stuff doesn't really make its appearance till the end of the series and the movies.

All being said, Neon Genesis Evangelion The Series is a worthy anime for those who enjoy man vs. himself and man vs. man conflict.  The movies on the other hand can be quite disturbing in addition to the plot being dropped at the end of the second movie (I mean it literally STOPS). Thus go for the series and enjoy it, but after that make up your own closing.  The movies just aren't worth it.
